Australia

Registered international courses and several degree-entry routes.

Open country chapter in the book (printed p. 52)

Study overview

Australian higher education includes public and private universities and other registered providers. CRICOS is the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. It identifies courses registered for international students on student visas; qualification level and professional recognition remain distinct matters.

Qualifications and entry routes

The Australian Qualifications Framework distinguishes award levels; provider and international-course registration are separate.

Bachelor’s degrees and honours

The Australian Qualifications Framework places the bachelor’s degree at level 7 and the bachelor honours degree at level 8. Honours can be embedded within a longer bachelor’s course or completed as a separate year after a bachelor’s degree. The honours structure includes advanced study appropriate to its field and can provide research preparation for further study. Graduate certificates and graduate diplomas also sit at level 8, but have different purposes and learning outcomes. Sharing a framework level does not make these qualifications interchangeable.

Official references

Master’s and doctoral distinctions

AQF level 9 contains research, coursework and extended master’s qualifications; doctoral degrees sit at level 10. Coursework master’s duration depends partly on previous study, its subject relationship and the course’s purpose. TEQSA’s examples range from one year after relevant honours preparation to two years after a bachelor’s in a different discipline. An extended master’s has a distinct professional structure, commonly three to four years after a bachelor’s. Some approved extended master’s awards use professional titles, so the word Doctor in a course name does not alone establish doctoral-level research study.

Provider status and CRICOS

TEQSA’s National Register distinguishes Australian Universities, University Colleges, Institutes of Higher Education and Overseas Universities. These categories identify registered higher-education providers; they are not interchangeable institutional titles. CRICOS separately records providers and courses available to people studying in Australia on student visas. A provider’s TEQSA registration therefore does not establish that every course or delivery location accepts student-visa enrolment. The international course record identifies the relevant qualification and location. Online provision and domestic course offerings can have different availability from the institution’s CRICOS-listed programmes.

Official references

Applications, pathways and transfers

International applications usually go directly to the institution. The route can change with the qualification: Sydney directs international applicants taking Australian Year 12 or an IB diploma in Australia through UAC. Foundation courses prepare students for entry; approved diploma pathways may provide degree credit. The receiving programme determines how much prior study counts. From 2 October 2026, non-school international students are generally restricted from changing providers during the first 12 months of their principal course, subject to exceptions. This temporary restriction ends on 30 June 2027; the six-month period resumes on 1 July.

Official references

Teaching, health and living costs

Course calendars and clinical selection differ; tuition, housing and health cover create separate costs.

Semesters and block teaching

Many universities offer a first-semester start in February or March and a second-semester start in July. Mid-year availability depends on the programme’s sequence rather than on a national entitlement to start every degree twice a year. Institutions also use alternative teaching calendars. Victoria University’s Block Model concentrates undergraduate study on one subject at a time in four-week blocks; some postgraduate courses use eight-week blocks. These structures change assessment timing and the weekly pattern of study even when the final qualification has the same AQF level.

Official references

Medical and clinical selection

Medical entry includes school-leaver pathways and graduate-entry degrees with distinct eligibility and testing. UCAT ANZ serves specified consortium courses, while ISAT is used by selected programmes for international applicants. Graduate routes can require GAMSAT or an accepted alternative. Melbourne’s four-year Doctor of Medicine admits graduates through a process including academic assessment and interview; its international route accepts MCAT from applicants residing outside Australia at application. Clinical education takes place through allocated clinical schools and sites. Admission to a degree and subsequent professional registration remain different processes.

Official references

Visa applications and health cover

A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) supports a Student visa application after the offer is accepted. Overseas Student Health Cover is generally required throughout the stay, with recognised exemptions. From 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders must apply outside Australia; current students need an exemption to apply for a further visa onshore. Partners and children can be included only under specified exemptions, including doctoral study or qualifying government sponsorship. They cannot be added after visa grant as subsequent entrants. Applications lodged before 2 October remain subject to the earlier rules. Existing Student visas remain valid.

Tuition and accommodation costs

Tuition depends on the provider, qualification and subject, while living costs depend strongly on location and accommodation. Purpose-built student housing, university residences, homestays and private shared rentals offer different combinations of room, meals, utilities and services. A rental figure with electricity and internet included is not directly comparable with a room-only figure. Initial moving costs and recurring expenses are separate parts of the budget. Study Australia’s cost calculator distinguishes housing, transport and lifestyle choices; it supplies estimates rather than a fixed national student living allowance.

Entrance and language assessments

UCAT ANZ

Applies to: Relevant medical, dental and clinical-science courses at consortium institutions.

The University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand serves named consortium courses and applicant categories. International routes do not all require UCAT ANZ; some use ISAT instead. The 2026 cycle supplies results for 2027 entry.

https://www.ucat.edu.au/about-ucat-anz/universities/

ISAT

Applies to: Selected medical and health-related courses admitting international students.

ACER’s International Student Admissions Test forms one component of selection at participating programmes. It is not an alternative accepted automatically by every UCAT ANZ course; the institution’s international entry route determines its use.

https://isat.acer.org/

GAMSAT

Applies to: Specified graduate-entry medical and related programmes.

The Graduate Medical School Admissions Test is used alongside degree results and other selection components. Melbourne’s standard graduate medicine route requires valid GAMSAT results except where its published international MCAT alternative applies. An academic threshold does not guarantee selection.

https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/doctor-of-medicine/entry-requirements

MCAT

Applies to: Specified international graduate medicine routes accepting the North American examination.

Melbourne accepts MCAT results from international applicants residing outside Australia at the time of application; international applicants residing in Australia use GAMSAT. This is a defined institutional alternative, not a national exemption from Australian medical selection.

Scholarships and funding routes

Award terms below retain the intake or reference period stated in the book.

Australian Government — Research Training Program (RTP)

Research master’s and research doctorate

Support: University packages may include fee offsets, a stipend and allowances. Published 2027 full-time annual stipend limits are AUD 35,550–55,537. Standard support lasts up to two full-time years for research master’s degrees and three to four for doctorates.

Eligibility: Domestic and international students undertaking a research master’s or research doctorate at an eligible Australian higher education provider; each institution selects its recipients.

Application: Apply to the university through its research-degree and scholarship process. Students may seek RTP awards from more than one institution; the Department of Education does not accept student applications.

Conditions: RTP is institutional funding, not a single central competition. A fee-offset award does not necessarily include a stipend. Bachelor’s and coursework master’s degrees are excluded.

Official award information

University of Melbourne — Graduate Research Scholarships

Research master’s and doctorate

Support: Full fees for up to two years for research master’s and four for doctorates; AUD 41,100 annual stipend at the 2027 full-time rate for up to two and 3.5 years respectively. Relocation grants are AUD 2,000 interstate or AUD 3,000 overseas; eligible international recipients receive single OSHC.

Eligibility: New or current domestic and international graduate researchers. Stipend recipients are ranked on previous academic results and research potential. All domestic students admitted to research master’s or PhD study receive an RTP fee offset.

Application: New students applying for a research degree by its deadline receive automatic consideration. Current or deferred students use the enrolling faculty’s scholarship reconsideration process.

Conditions: Stipend packages are competitive. This umbrella scheme includes Melbourne Research Scholarships and RTP scholarships; the national RTP entry is an overlapping funding route, not an additional award.

Official award information

Monash International Merit Scholarship

Undergraduate

Support: AUD 15,000 per 48 credit points annually until the degree’s minimum credit requirement is completed; advertised total up to AUD 75,000 for awards made from 2026.

Eligibility: New international students holding an unconditional offer for full-time undergraduate study at an Australian Monash campus. Exclusions: Australian Year 12 students, Medical Science/MD entrants, Monash pathway students, current Monash students, and transfers from another Monash campus or Australian university.

Application: Automatic consideration of eligible undergraduate offer-holders; selection is based on academic achievement. No separate scholarship form is required.

Conditions: Twenty awards annually. Renewal requires a semester average of at least 70% and a student profile for university promotional use. Deferral is permitted only within the same calendar year.

Official award information

Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship

Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework

Support: 50% or 100% of tuition for the programme’s normal duration. Required participation in the Vice-Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Program and priority access to campus accommodation, paid by the student, are included.

Eligibility: New international coursework students meeting degree and English requirements. Academic minimum: 85% or equivalent in previous study; published examples include IB 32 and 80% in an undergraduate degree or its first four semesters. Doctor of Medicine is excluded.

Application: Email the scholarship form, 300-word statement, two community/leadership references and degree application with transcripts to Deakin International Admissions at least one month before commencement. Assessment is rolling; interviews may be requested.

Conditions: Minimum results do not guarantee selection. Accommodation remains payable, availability is limited, and extra or repeated units beyond the normal degree duration are excluded.
