Australia, in context.

Useful starting figures. Your programme, city and applicant category determine your actual costs.

STUDENT POPULATION CONTEXT

680,582 students, Jan–May

2026 YTD to May

Individual international students on student visas across higher education, VET, schools, English-language and non-award education.

What this figure includes

Partial-year, all-sector unique-student count. Separate enrolments can exceed students; not a university-only or full-year count.

This is not a count of new arrivals and is not directly comparable with every other country.

TUITION

Melbourne BSc example: AUD 52,944–62,208 in year one

University of Melbourne 2026 example. Actual subjects determine the fee; this is first-year tuition, not the complete degree or an Australian average. Add insurance, accommodation and other costs.

Cost reference checked 2026-09-26
LIVING COSTS

Melbourne housing example: AUD 399/week in 2026

Housing component only. This named standard-room tariff requires a 52-week contract; the published 48-week rate is AUD 432/week. Budget separately for food, transport, insurance and personal spending.

Your Australia application, step by step.

Official starting points and application framework; not a complete university or programme catalogue.

The finder covers different course types. Check qualification level, provider, campus, delivery mode and teaching language on the course page; use CRICOS for courses offered to overseas students on student visas.

01Identify the exact course

Choose a recognised provider and the qualification that fits your previous study. Course searches can include English-language preparation, vocational qualifications and higher-education degrees.

  • Confirm academic and English entry requirements on the provider page.
  • For student-visa study, verify the course and provider in CRICOS.
02Apply and examine the offer

Follow the education provider’s application process. Read the offer conditions, payment requirements and refund terms before accepting.

  • Record the deadline for your intake and any scholarship application.
  • Prepare the academic documents, English evidence and other materials requested by the course.
03Prepare for the visa stage

After accepting an offer and completing the provider’s requirements, obtain the Confirmation of Enrolment. Follow the current Student visa guidance and the applicant-specific checklist.

  • Check English-evidence, health-insurance and Genuine Student requirements in the current official process.
  • Use current Home Affairs guidance for fees, documents and processing times.
04Keep study and visa requirements separate

A provider may accept an English test or a waiver for admission that does not automatically satisfy the visa rules. Check both before booking a test.

  • Check whether your selected test version is accepted for the intended purpose.
  • Plan enough time to resolve conditions before the course start and provider’s latest arrival date.

Build your own timeline

Relative planning stages; institution and applicant-specific deadlines must be checked.

Record course, scholarship, test, document, deposit and visa dates separately. No individual 2027 intake deadline is confirmed by this overview.

Exams to research

These are research links, not a statement that every institution accepts or requires each exam. Check the exact programme, intake, test version, minimum component scores and visa rules.

Coverage and source notes
  • Visa page content can require JavaScript; the government Study Australia process guide supplies the readable overview.
  • No guaranteed visa outcome, work entitlement or migration pathway is stated.
