D1 / From a university listing to a shortlist

Use the linked directory to move from a promising institution to a course that fits your preparation, budget and plans.

Start with the course

A university listing provides an entry point, not a complete prospectus. Its subject fields identify areas of provision; they do not establish that every specialism, study level or teaching language is available. The next useful record is the exact programme: award, campus, mode, duration, curriculum and entry requirements. A shortlist built at this level is easier to compare than a collection of university names.

What the entry establishes

Institution type describes the provider’s structure. The address identifies a location, which may differ from the campus teaching a particular course. A listed email is a published contact, not necessarily a dedicated admissions channel. The official website leads to the institution’s own information. Programme accreditation and professional recognition require a closer reading, especially where the intended career is regulated.

Rankings need a label

Selected entries show overall QS World University Rankings 2027 positions. QS, or Quacquarelli Symonds, is the organisation publishing that ranking. The edition, overall or subject category, tied position and rank band all affect interpretation. A missing rank in this directory does not establish that an institution is unranked. Curriculum, access requirements and the student’s aims remain central to the choice.

Follow the evidence to its owner

University pages govern programme and fee details. Immigration authorities publish entry and residence rules; professional regulators determine routes into licensed practice. Scholarship providers set award conditions. The links in this book make those sources easier to reach, but a retrieved page may describe an earlier intake. The relevant call or fee schedule needs to match the intended start date.

A reference that can be corrected

Edition 2027 identifies this publication; it does not make every cited figure a confirmed 2027 offer. Publication notes record research and currency dates. Selected high-impact rules were checked again on 5 October 2026; this was not a fresh verification of every institutional listing. Corrections can be sent with the institution, page and official source to inspire@viaglowbal.com.

D2 / Two destinations, different entry routes

School qualifications, subject preparation and programme selection determine the path. Policy notes checked 5 October 2026.

Germany: identify the qualification route

Germany’s familiar “13 years” description is not a universal instruction to add a school year. For the specified Indian Class XII routes from winter 2026/27, guidance from the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) India requires at least 70% overall. Class XII with APS can support a subject-restricted Studienkolleg route. One successfully completed academic year of a regular bachelor’s at a recognised institution may instead support direct entry in the previous or a closely related field. Recognition establishes eligibility; competitive admission follows the university’s rules.

Preparation and the application file

A Studienkolleg commonly lasts two semesters and usually requires German, even before an English-taught degree. Its Feststellungsprüfung assesses progression. APS verifies relevant academic records; a uni-assist VPD records a preliminary qualification assessment where the university requires it. Neither document replaces the university application. Language evidence, subject requirements and the institution’s submission route belong in the same application plan.

The dMAT update

From summer 2027, the digital Master Test (dMAT) applies to selected APS India master’s applicants with previous degrees in engineering, specified commerce-related subjects, or business and management. Transitional and programme exemptions apply. APS determines mixed-field cases; standalone computing degrees are not automatically included. A low result does not automatically mean rejection. The APS notice explains classification and transitional conditions.

Italy: read the programme’s admission call

A course’s teaching language and admissions category determine the relevant route. Since November 2025, CEnT-S has replaced English TOLC-E, English TOLC-I and English TOLC-F for selected programmes. It does not replace all TOLC tests or prove English-language proficiency. The university’s call identifies the accepted test, ranking procedure, documents and application period.

Medicine follows its own selection

The Italian-language open-semester system does not remove the English-language medical entrance route. Public English-taught Medicine and Surgery uses IMAT in the 2026/27 cycle, including Messina; private institutions publish their own procedures. The next cycle’s annual call determines places and dates. Course language also matters during clinical training and professional registration.

D3 / The application date can change the rule

UK, Canada and Australia: selected conditions checked 5 October 2026. The relevant rule depends on the route and individual circumstances.

United Kingdom: funds and the Graduate route

Student visa maintenance evidence is £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, plus applicable course fees. These are evidence thresholds, not quotations for a complete year’s living costs. The normal holding-period rules also affect when an application can be made. For eligible Graduate visa applicants, the period is two years if applying by 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates retain three years. The Graduate application date, rather than the degree start date, determines the period.

Canada: budget for the correct household

Outside Quebec, applications from 1 September 2026 require CAN$23,448 for one person’s first-year living expenses, excluding tuition and transport. Accompanying family increases the requirement; Quebec has separate provisions. A multi-year study plan also needs an explanation of funding for the remaining period. Housing costs and the actual city budget can exceed the immigration minimum.

Canada: programme and work eligibility

From January 2026, degree-granting master’s and doctoral applicants at public designated learning institutions are exempt from the federal provincial or territorial attestation-letter requirement. Quebec’s own requirements still apply. Eligible off-campus work is limited to 24 hours weekly during regular terms. Post-graduation work-permit eligibility depends on programme and individual conditions: a provider’s designated status alone is insufficient. Neither permitted work nor potential graduate employment is confirmed income for the study budget.

Australia: new applications and family

Rules effective 2 October 2026 restrict further Student visa applications lodged inside Australia and the inclusion of dependants. Onshore applications and accompanying family require an applicable exemption. Family members cannot be added later as subsequent entrants. Existing visas remain valid; earlier applications follow the rules at lodgement. The Home Affairs guidance explains the exemptions and transitional cases.

Australia: changing education providers

A temporary education rule extends the transfer-restriction period for non-school international students to the first 12 months of the principal course, subject to exceptions. The six-month period resumes on 1 July 2027. School students remain under the six-month rule. Permission to transfer provider does not itself secure another visa.

D4 / The value of a scholarship

The headline amount matters only alongside eligibility, covered costs, payment timing and the conditions for keeping the award.

Citizenship and residence both matter

Residence in Oman does not make every nationality-based award available on the same terms. Chevening applicants for an official development assistance (ODA) country award must also live in an ODA-eligible country. Commonwealth Master’s eligibility includes permanent residence in an eligible Commonwealth country. These are programme-specific rules. Citizenship, present residence, permanent residence and fee status should each be matched to the wording of the relevant award.

Separate support by the cost it pays

A tuition waiver reduces the fee bill. A stipend supplies money on a payment schedule. Accommodation support may provide a room, a reservation or a cash allowance; those arrangements have different values. Research funds may reimburse eligible project costs rather than support everyday spending. A practical comparison records the amount allocated to tuition, living, travel, insurance and research, then identifies the costs still payable by the family.

Payment timing can create a gap

The published 2026 Paris-Saclay scheme provides €10,000 per academic year, paid September–June, with up to €900 in annual travel and visa support. Specified periods abroad or external internships reduce payments. The example shows why an annual award cannot be treated as cash available before departure. Deposits, flights and initial accommodation may fall due before the first instalment.

Place the applications in order

Some awards require school nomination; others require a course application, institutional nomination or a confirmed offer before scholarship consideration. The Lester B. Pearson route begins with school nomination, then Toronto admission and a separate scholarship application. A later scholarship deadline does not extend the earlier academic deadline. A single calendar should record the dependency between those submissions.

Compare renewal and the remaining bill

An award may cover the first year only, require academic progress or exclude a preparation year. A tuition waiver can still leave a compulsory host fee: Master Mind’s published 2026/27 terms permit a small institutional charge. The comparison should show support year by year, the renewal condition and the unfunded balance. Until a written award is issued, the baseline budget should remain affordable without it.

D5 / Follow the money across the whole degree

This fictional three-year scenario demonstrates the method. All amounts are US dollars; none is a country or university price quotation.

Build the recurring annual cost

Assume tuition of US$12,000 a year, compulsory academic charges of US$500, living costs of US$900 a month and travel of US$800 a year. Twelve months of living therefore cost US$10,800. The recurring annual total is US$24,100. One-time arrival and setup costs of US$1,800 raise the first year to US$25,900. The example assumes no scholarship, tuition increase, preparation year or earnings from work.

Extend the calculation beyond year one

Across three years, tuition totals US$36,000; living US$32,400; academic charges US$1,500; travel US$2,400; and initial setup US$1,800. The subtotal is US$74,100. A 10% planning reserve adds US$7,410, producing US$81,510. Allocated by year, that is US$28,490 in year one and US$26,510 in each later year. A longer degree or a required preparation year adds another period of costs.

Stress-test the assumption

If tuition rises by 5% annually, the tuition sequence becomes US$12,000, US$12,600 and US$13,230. Keeping all other assumptions unchanged raises the subtotal to US$75,930. With the same 10% reserve method, the total becomes US$83,523. This is a sensitivity exercise, not a forecast. It shows how a modest annual change can alter the whole-course commitment.

Cash needed is not always final expenditure

A refundable housing deposit can increase money needed before travel even if it is returned later. A blocked account holds money released for living costs; adding both its full balance and the living expenses it pays would duplicate the same money. Tuition deposits normally contribute to the fee bill under the institution’s terms. Their refund conditions determine the financial exposure if plans change.

Track dates, currencies and transfers

A cash-flow schedule places deposits, tuition instalments, rent and scholarship receipts in the months when they occur. The directory’s converted figures use 29-30 September 2026 rates; this dollar-only example uses no currency conversion. Real transfers also depend on provider rates, conversion margins and charges. A family paying from OMR or INR needs a current payment quote and enough accessible funds for the next obligation, even when annual resources appear sufficient.

D6 / From school to professional practice

A suitable degree develops knowledge and skills while keeping the required academic and professional routes open.

Grades 9–10: keep the right subjects open

Early planning connects interests with the subjects needed for likely fields. Mathematics, sciences, languages and creative practice can affect later eligibility. Projects, reading and conversations with practitioners help students test an interest before selecting a stream. Counselling can organise that evidence and identify alternatives; one aptitude score should not decide a career.

Grade 11: prepare for the relevant assessment

The course determines the test. JEE Main serves specified Indian engineering routes; UCAT is used by participating medical programmes. Law applicants may encounter CLAT or LNAT, depending on the destination and institution. A preparation calendar should accommodate school work, test registration, portfolios and language evidence. IELTS, TOEFL and PTE acceptance depends on the institution’s stated version and score requirements.

Grade 12: applications and examinations run together

Many applications begin before final school results. Where accepted, school transcripts and predicted grades support an application, with final results supplied later. References, admissions tests and scholarship files can have earlier deadlines than board examinations. A conditional offer records what must still be achieved. After results, the calendar shifts to completing conditions, accepting the place and arranging funding, accommodation and student status.

For medicine, establish the return pathway early

Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India planning a primary medical qualification abroad must qualify the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG); the National Medical Commission (NMC) states a three-year validity for this purpose. For students covered by the 2021 foreign-graduate rules, the required medical study, separate same-institution internship, host-country licensing conditions and Indian registration route all matter. A university’s admission offer or directory listing does not establish compliance. The medicine reference explains the training and registration requirements in more detail.

Apply the same logic to other professions

Law, architecture, nursing, pharmacy, teaching and clinical psychology can require recognised training, practical experience, examinations or registration beyond the initial degree. The intended country of work helps determine which route is relevant. Course accreditation, supervised practice and clinical or professional language deserve attention before enrolment, especially when a qualification will be taken across borders.
