LESSON 3 OF 4 · FREE · ABOUT 4 MINUTES

Match mechanisms, quantities and units

Review cell function, energy flow, concentration and work.

The idea

Ribosomes assemble proteins. Energy transferred through food chains is not fully converted into new biomass. Concentration and work are defined relationships with specific units.

A method to try

  1. Connect a biological structure to its function.
  2. Write amount/volume for concentration and force×distance for aligned constant-force work.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Follow the reasoning.

A constant force of 8 N acts along a displacement of 5 m. Calculate the work done by that force.

  1. For an aligned constant force, work equals force times displacement: 8 × 5 = 40 J.
  2. The unit newton metre is equivalent to the joule for work. If the force were perpendicular to the displacement, its work would instead be zero.
  3. This difference shows why the direction condition matters. State the relation and its assumptions before using the numbers, rather than selecting a formula solely because it contains the units given.
CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Think it through first.

Where does a cell translate an mRNA sequence into a polypeptide?

Show the explanation

At a ribosome.

Ribosomes assemble amino acids according to the mRNA sequence; later processing can occur elsewhere.

Make it your own

After reading, explain the method in your own words and identify the condition that makes it valid. Then try the linked starter practice without referring back to the worked example. Review the reasoning behind an error before repeating the same item; remembering an answer is different from being able to solve a new problem.

This lesson is one part of a short starter pathway. It does not cover the full exam syllabus or establish a predicted score.
