Study in Germany
Your route.
Your next step.
Start with your educational qualification and intended degree, not the assumption that everyone needs a foundation year. Then verify the course, its teaching language and the correct application route.

Choose the closest starting point. Check the exceptions before acting.
01School-leaver planning a bachelor’s degreeA student applying with secondary-school qualifications, including CBSE, state boards, IB or A levels.
- Check the exact qualification and subject combination through the official recognition guidance.
- Identify direct general access, direct subject-restricted access or a Studienkolleg/FSP route.
- Check the receiving institution’s selection, German or English requirements and programme deadline.
- Studienkolleg is not universal and passing its final assessment does not guarantee a university place.
- Do not apply an Indian-board route to an IB or A-level applicant without checking the corresponding qualification.
- A simple comparison of 12 and 13 school years is not an eligibility decision. The qualification, subjects and examination year matter.
02Applicant with Indian Class XII recordsApplicants whose relevant school qualification falls within APS India’s published Indian undergraduate routes.
- For Winter 2026/27 onward, check the revised Class XII threshold in the APS notice.
- The two described routes are Studienkolleg access or direct subject-restricted access after a successful academic year in a recognised bachelor’s programme.
- Complete the applicable APS procedure and verify the university’s assessment of your subject eligibility.
- The notice requires at least 70% overall Class XII marks for those two routes; an academic year alone is not enough.
- Transitional treatment and other qualification routes must be checked individually; APS is not the admissions decision-maker.
- Using a prior academic year to establish entry eligibility does not automatically grant transfer credit or second-year standing in Germany.
03Applicant with JEE Main and Advanced resultsApplicants using Indian Class XII records and successful JEE Main and Advanced results for the relevant subject-specific route.
- Keep proof of passing both JEE Main and Advanced; Main alone is not the JEE-based route described by uni-assist.
- Use DAAD’s Advanced-rank guidance for technology and natural-science subjects, then ask the university to assess the exact intended programme.
- Complete applicable APS, language and university application requirements.
- A JEE result does not guarantee admission or unrestricted choice of subject.
- The 2026 APS Class XII notice does not explicitly resolve its threshold’s interaction with the separate JEE route; obtain clarification rather than assuming an exemption or automatic extension.
04Bachelor’s graduate applying for a master’sApplicants with a prior degree who need to establish subject, credit and language suitability.
- Check recognition of the awarding institution and the course’s required subject credits and grades.
- Read the current document and language requirements; determine whether APS and uni-assist/VPD apply.
- If applying through the affected APS India master’s groups for Summer 2027 or later, check dMAT scope and exceptions.
- A bachelor’s title alone does not prove the required subject credits.
- dMAT is scoped to selected previous-degree fields and applicant groups, not every master’s or bachelor’s applicant.
05Choosing the correct application portalApplicants with a selected university and intake.
- Check whether the university takes direct applications, uni-assist applications or a VPD followed by direct application.
- Check APS separately where the qualification requires it. Request any VPD early enough for the university’s final application deadline.
- Submit the final required application and track missing-document requests.
- A VPD request does not submit a degree application to the university.
- A general summer/winter deadline is not safe for every programme or applicant category.
- APS is issued by the responsible Academic Evaluation Centre; a university-specific VPD is issued by uni-assist. They are not interchangeable.
- The usual four-to-six-week VPD estimate is not a guaranteed individual turnaround or permission to miss the university’s deadline.
06Planning money and the visaApplicants who need to finance study and meet the competent mission’s entry requirements.
- Check the actual programme’s tuition and semester contribution.
- Build a city-specific budget for housing, insurance, travel and everyday spending.
- Use the competent mission’s current student-visa and financing instructions.
- Public university does not always mean no tuition.
- The visa minimum and an illustrative living-cost budget are different; future part-time work is not guaranteed funding.
From paperwork to your first semester.
Keep each step separate. An offer, enrolment, an insurance notification and address registration have different requirements.

Read the guideQuestions worth asking
Does every international student need Studienkolleg?
No. It depends on the recognised school qualification and prior academic study. Some applicants have direct access; others need a subject-specific preparatory route. The university decides admission.
Can one year of university in India avoid Studienkolleg?
It can support the direct subject-restricted route if all conditions are met. The APS notice for Winter 2026/27 onward includes a recognised, successfully completed bachelor-level academic year and at least 70% overall in Class XII. It does not guarantee a place or an unrelated subject.
Does JEE Main alone establish direct entry in Germany?
No. uni-assist’s India guidance makes this JEE route relevant only after successfully passing Main and Advanced. DAAD describes Advanced ranking for subject-specific technology and natural-science applications; the university still decides admission.
Does my Indian passport automatically mean I need APS India?
APS India focuses on relevant academic documents issued by Indian institutions, not nationality alone. Applicants with overseas qualifications or a possible exemption should use the official requirements guidance and confirm the university and visa requirements.
Is dMAT now compulsory for everyone?
No. APS lists selected previous-degree fields and exceptions for the Summer 2027 master’s intake onward. Check the affected-fields list before booking. The registration window displayed for the September 2026 sitting has already closed.
Are all courses shown by an international-programme search entirely English?
No such assumption should be made. Check the actual programme language, compulsory modules and any named pathway. An English-language admission test and an English-taught degree are separate facts.
Is Germany free, and does a VPD secure admission?
Neither claim is reliable. Budget using the institution’s tuition and semester contribution. A VPD is a preliminary qualification evaluation; you must still complete the university’s application when that route applies.
Are APS and VPD the same document?
No. The responsible APS centre verifies relevant educational records. uni-assist issues a VPD for a selected university’s procedure. You may need both; having one does not replace the other or complete the university application.
