Ask for the university notification

Check your university's health-insurance instructions after admission. A German statutory insurer generally handles the electronic notification of the status required for enrolment. Owning an insurance policy or uploading a PDF may not complete that process.

  • Give the insurer the correct university and any university identifier requested by that institution.
  • Confirm the notification status with the insurer and university if your enrolment remains incomplete.

If you already have overseas cover

Recognised home-country insurance can follow a different route. Depending on your insurance system and entitlement, evidence may include an EHIC, GHIC or another entitlement certificate. A German statutory insurer can assess the cover and notify the university.

  • Citizenship alone is not proof that your policy is valid for the whole study period.
  • Check your own insurance circumstances before assuming that you must buy a second policy.

If you have private cover or need an exemption

Ask a statutory insurer which assessment is required. A private policy does not automatically replace the enrolment notification. TK's current guidance says a formal exemption request has a three-month window from the start of compulsory insurance and can have lasting consequences for returning to statutory cover.

  • Clarify those consequences with the insurer before applying for exemption.
  • Use the university's timetable; do not assume another institution's later-submission permission applies.

Check your individual category

Age and study circumstances can change the available insurance route. If you are outside compulsory student insurance, still arrange suitable cover and the university's required status confirmation.

  • Keep enrolment confirmation, policy coverage and any immigration insurance requirements as separate checks.
  • Use official insurer and university advice for your case; this guide does not compare policies or quote premiums.
