Use residence for the visa route
The Italian mission deciding your visa is determined by its consular jurisdiction. DoV jurisdiction can differ because it follows the qualification’s place of issue. A VFS centre collects applications; it does not decide the visa.
If you are legally resident in Oman, follow the separate Oman guide and the Italian Embassy in Muscat’s study instructions. An Indian passport does not by itself make the India VFS route applicable.

Which mission covers your state?
New Delhi lists Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep.
Bengaluru covers Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Kolkata covers West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, the north-eastern states and Andaman and Nicobar Islands; it also has Nepal responsibility.
If your residence changed, your state is not clearly listed, or you live outside India, ask the competent mission before booking. Do not assume an Indian passport alone makes an Indian VAC the correct route. Bengaluru’s 2026 checklist, for example, includes residence-evidence requirements when addresses differ.
Use the appointment and document gateways
Begin with your mission’s study page and follow its VFS appointment link. Mumbai directs long-study applicants to the specified Mumbai and Cochin centres; Bengaluru uses Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Check the category and location offered before confirming. Mumbai also requires a video interview when the study visa application is submitted.
Download the current study checklist and application form from the relevant mission/provider page. A short-stay Schengen form is not automatically the form for a national type-D study visa. Some official gateways still link older PDFs: keep the document date and ask about conflicting requirements rather than silently treating an old file as a new intake rule.
Prepare the evidence the selected checklist actually requests: admission/pre-enrolment, identity, finances, accommodation, insurance and academic records as applicable. An admission offer or a successful Universitaly step does not guarantee a visa.
Mumbai’s VFS Long Term Study subsection links a separate long-stay application PDF, included in the sources below. Use the live category page to confirm that this remains the form requested for your submission.

Separate the visa fee from service charges
On the Mumbai VFS long-study page checked on 22 September 2026, the type-D study visa fee is €50, shown locally as ₹5,350, and the VFS service charge is ₹631 including taxes. These are the page’s local figures, not a promise for every mission or future exchange-rate revision. Optional services cost extra; verify the payable amount at booking.
The Mumbai mission states that long-study processing can take up to 90 days from consular receipt, with extra time possible for additional documentation. An appointment slot is not the start of every processing clock. Allow time for booking, collection and any interview or further request.
Keep the application traceable
Save your booking confirmation, submitted checklist version, payment breakdown, application receipt and tracking reference. Monitor the contact details you supplied and keep your university informed of a genuine visa delay. Pay for optional conveniences only when you understand what they provide.
