Scope and current status
The national IMAT 2026 examination took place on 29 September. This guide now separates the post-exam route from preparation for 2027. It covers public-university medicine in English; private universities can use different tests and calls.
Exam status and official paper links were checked on 8 October 2026. The university-specific examples below retain their 22 September review date and 2026/27 scope; they are not new application opportunities or confirmed 2027 rules.
First, choose the right timeline
Already took IMAT 2026? Follow the official results and ranking instructions for your applicant category. EU/equivalent candidates and non-EU applicants residing abroad can follow different ranking routes. Check your own account and university notice for any action needed to keep or accept a place. A published answer key is not an admission offer.
Did not register for 2026? The national booking window closed on 9 September 2026 at 15:00 CEST and the examination has now passed. Do not pay for a supposed late registration to that sitting.
Planning 2027? Prepare your eligibility and documents now. No official 2027 IMAT test date, booking window or seat decree was verified in the 8 October review. General international-entry procedures for 2027/28 do not establish the IMAT calendar or an individual university’s call.
Open the official 2026 paper and answer key
Use the MUR-hosted PDF linked here to review the 2026 examination. Parma’s official test page links this paper and explains that the correct answer is displayed as option A in the published version; candidates saw reordered questions and options during the examination. Compare the answer itself, not just a letter from your recollection.
For 2027 preparation, use it as a historical example and record the topics you need to revise. It does not confirm the next year’s format. We link the original official PDF; it is separate from Via Glowbal’s original practice questions.
The six checkpoints
These are separate checkpoints, not six promises of admission. The university assesses qualifications; the consulate decides the visa. See the Universitaly source below.
- Your qualification. Check the exact school award, country rules, required subjects, minimum marks and any home-country university-entry examination. A strong entrance-test score does not replace an eligible qualification.
- Your applicant category. Determine whether you belong to the EU/equivalent competition or the non-EU-abroad quota. Passport nationality alone does not settle every case. Ask the university if your residence status is unclear.
- Your university’s own application. Check whether it requires preliminary assessment, another portal, a document fee or an earlier deadline.
- Universitaly pre-enrolment. Complete this where required for your international/visa route. It is distinct from booking the test.
- The test and ranking. Register and pay within the test window. Then follow your category’s ranking, interest-confirmation and enrolment rules.
- Your arrival. Complete qualification verification, visa and enrolment obligations and use the first-year course calendar when planning travel.

Why “I booked IMAT” may not be enough
These are historical 2026/27 examples checked on 22 September 2026. Each deadline belongs to its named university and applicant group; do not copy it into a 2027 calendar.
Messina’s 2026/27 IMAT page says applicants needed both their UniME application and Universitaly application by 20 July 2026. That is a local prerequisite, months before the exam, rather than an Italy-wide deadline. See the Messina source below.
Turin required non-EU-abroad visa applicants and Marco Polo applicants choosing it first to enter its separate MyUniTo competition by 11 September 2026 at 15:00 GMT+2. See the Turin source below.
Pavia’s current call states pre-enrolment by 31 August 2026. It also describes an extra diploma-assessment application for non-EU applicants taking the test in Pavia. That application had its own €35 fee and window. The English call contains some old-year references, so contradictory details require clarification from the admission office. See sections 2–4 of the Pavia call below.
Does Messina require 70%?
Official historical UniME criteria specify a 70% minimum for Indian school qualifications. This is a qualification-country requirement, not an IMAT percentage or a rule for every applicant in Italy. The current application page links an updated country-criteria PDF, but its India row could not be independently retrieved in this review. Confirm that row and the marks calculation before committing to an application.
A reported rejection should be checked against the anonymised written decision and the relevant cycle. It cannot establish a universal rejection rule by itself. Both versions are linked below.
Understand the seat table and scores
Use the accompanying table with its 2026/27 year and separate applicant columns. It covers 18 Italy programme/campus entries at 17 public universities; two Padua programmes are not two universities. Tor Vergata’s Tirana campus is in Albania and is listed separately. Check the local call for reserved subquotas: Pavia’s 40 non-EU-abroad seats include five Marco Polo places.
An eligible score, a competitive cutoff and an allocated place are different things. This guide does not yet publish a verified 2026 closing cutoff. A score must be tied to the university, applicant category, ranking round and publication date before being described as a cutoff. The retained historical example is Parma’s initial 2025 non-EU-abroad ranking, where the last highlighted eligible rank was 45 at 67.6/90. It is not a verified final closing score or a prediction for another year.

When do classes start?
There is no universal November start for all Italian medicine students. Messina specifically lists 9 November 2026 for first-year Medicine and Surgery, while later years begin earlier. Use your own programme, year of study and timetable. See the programme calendar below.
