Start with where you actually live

This guide concerns national visas for study applicants resident in India. In the Consular Services Portal, select your country of residence and the German mission responsible for your Indian state or district. Citizenship does not determine that selection: an Indian passport holder living in Oman should use the Oman route. Choosing a different consulate to chase appointments can require restarting the application.

Record your intended degree, institution, teaching language, admission conditions and start date before opening the application. Keep a university-place search, an admitted student's course and a standalone language course distinct when answering the portal questions.

Apply through CSP, then complete the appointment

Start at the official study page, digital.diplo.de/studium. India's current instructions require CSP for available categories, including studies. The application form is integrated; a separate VIDEX form is unnecessary for this route. Complete the questionnaire accurately, upload the evidence and submit for preliminary review.

Answer correction requests in your account. After the preliminary check, follow the appointment link and instructions supplied through CSP. The personal appointment still covers identity, biometrics, fees and any requested originals. A completed upload is therefore one milestone, not the entire procedure or a visa decision. Check the account for status and further instructions.

Build the document set around your course

Use the mission's current Studies checklist alongside your personalised CSP requests. Prepare your passport, admission letter showing outstanding conditions, relevant school or degree records, semester marksheets, language evidence, CV, personal motivation letter, funding and health-insurance evidence. Include APS or the specified recognition evidence for an exemption. The checklist also addresses tuition or language-course payments.

For direct degree entry, the India checklist generally states C1 in the teaching language; preparatory courses have different benchmarks. It excludes Duolingo, Pearson PTE and TOEFL home-edition tests. A university offer alone should not be treated as a language-test exemption. In the questionnaire, the specific German B2 question means German B2, even for an English-taught course.

  • Read each upload description before selecting a file; open the uploaded preview to check legibility.
  • Make names, course titles and dates consistent across the offer, application and supporting records.

Resolve APS from your qualifications

APS India verifies qualifications issued by Indian educational institutions; nationality is not the decisive test. Use its requirements quiz and the checklist for your academic stage. Possible exemptions include a relevant foreign degree, an international school qualification such as IB, qualifying German/EU public funding and certain doctoral or postdoctoral cases. Check the exact exemption rather than assuming that residence abroad settles it.

Start early enough for verification. Keep the issued digital certificate as its original standalone PDF: APS says not to rename, edit or merge it. APS verification does not replace admission or the visa decision.

Show accessible study funding

The government's 2026 study guidance gives €11,904 as the annual blocked-account benchmark. Alternatives can include an eligible scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment. The student-place-search route has a different financial benchmark, so do not reuse its figures for an admitted student's application.

India's FAQ treats an education loan as additional evidence, rather than a substitute for the blocked account. A family affidavit also does not replace a German Verpflichtungserklärung. Check whether a scholarship covers living expenses or only tuition, and document any remaining gap.

When comparing blocked-account providers, include banking charges in your budget. The Foreign Office does not endorse providers; check the amount and monthly restriction required for your own purpose before transferring money. Keep separate funds for costs that arise before you can access monthly withdrawals.

Use the appointment route assigned to you

The India FAQ places most student appointments with VFS, including the listed APS-based German degree, German/EU scholarship and doctoral categories. It distinguishes institutions awarding non-German degrees, which use the mission. Follow your CSP appointment instructions instead of choosing a venue yourself.

Prepare the originals and appointment documents requested for your case. Check the appointment address, permitted payment method and passport number against the confirmation before travelling. Keep a copy of the final submitted evidence and every receipt together.

Budget for fees and an uncertain completion date

The standard national-visa fee is €75 for adults and €37.50 for minors, with applicable exemptions. India's 27 August 2026 page displays ₹8,400 and ₹4,200, but payment uses the rupee exchange rate on the appointment date; the service provider charges separately.

National-visa processing can take several months. Allow separately for APS, CSP review, appointment availability and the decision; there is no verified universal end-to-end student deadline here. Ask your university for its latest permitted arrival date and deferral process before committing to non-refundable travel. Checked 29 September 2026: reopen the live checklist and your portal instructions before submission.
