Portugal

University and polytechnic routes with distinct international fee schedules

Open country chapter in the book (printed p. 238)

Study overview

Portugal combines research universities and practice-oriented polytechnics, with public and private provision. Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and smaller university cities offer different costs and settings. Portuguese remains important in undergraduate study, while selected programmes are taught in English.

Coimbra Course Example / Year

EUR 7,000
Approx. US$ 7,950

Published international annual fee for Coimbra’s bachelor’s in Informatics Engineering. This is a Portuguese-taught course example, not a national or all-subject tariff.

Shared-Housing Scenario / Month

EUR 700–1,100
Approx. US$ 790–1,250

Editorial planning scenario using national-portal housing, food and transport categories plus personal costs. Private housing in Lisbon or Porto can exceed this allowance.

Planning figures retain their source year. USD conversions use 29–30 September 2026 reference rates; these are not current payment quotations.

Typical degree length: Bachelor’s: 3–4 years.
Master’s: usually 1½–2 years.
Integrated master’s: 5–6 years.

Fields: Engineering, computing, business, marine sciences, architecture, tourism and humanities.

Study and admission

Education, entry and student life

The structure of study, the application route and the practical decisions behind it.

Universities and polytechnics

Both sectors form part of Portugal’s higher-education system. Universities generally emphasise research and academic disciplines; polytechnics emphasise applied and professional study. Public and private institutions exist in both sectors. The national quality-assurance agency, A3ES, evaluates institutions and programmes. The precise accredited course and campus establish what qualification is awarded.

Degrees and progression

A bachelor’s normally carries 180–240 credits over three or four years. Master’s courses commonly take one and a half to two years, with some shorter exceptions. Certain professional programmes use an integrated five- or six-year master’s structure. A technical professional higher course, or TeSP, is a shorter qualification and should not be presented as a bachelor’s.

International admission

The international-student regime has specific nationality and residence rules. Institutions organise their own applications, available places and assessment of school qualifications. Subject examinations or accepted equivalent evidence may be required. The relevant public call identifies how foreign examination results are treated and whether additional tests are necessary.

The language of a course

A course page in English is not proof of English delivery. Coimbra’s Informatics Engineering bachelor’s, for example, lists Portuguese as the teaching language while allowing some assessment in English. Language requirements also affect internships and regulated professions. English-taught master’s degrees can provide alternatives for students who already hold a relevant undergraduate qualification.

Understanding the price

International fees are set by the institution and programme. The annual public fee cap applicable to national or equivalent students does not represent the normal international tariff. Medicine, management programmes and other specialist courses may have separate prices. Published instalment arrangements also determine how much cash is needed before enrolment.

Housing and daily life

The national study portal distinguishes university residences, shared rooms and private apartments. A shared room is quoted at EUR 250–650 monthly, while a private apartment can cost substantially more. Food and transport add to the total. The chapter’s monthly range is a constructed shared-housing budget; it is not a guaranteed cost for every Portuguese city.

Funding and research

Institutional merit schemes, subject-specific foundations and competitive research calls are distinct funding sources. Erasmus Mundus awards belong to particular joint master’s programmes. Doctoral research funding may come through the Foundation for Science and Technology, known as FCT, or a project vacancy. A general study offer does not itself include funding.

Entrance and language assessments

Assessment requirements are described in the study and admission sections above and in the institution’s programme terms.

Scholarships and funding routes

Award terms below retain the intake or reference period stated in the book.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

MASTER’S

Support: Selected joint master’s programmes offer competitive scholarships towards participation and living costs.

Eligibility: Applicants normally hold a bachelor’s degree or are completing one before the programme begins.

Application: Applications go to the individual consortium, which publishes its own selection process.

Conditions: An award applies to a named joint programme and its mobility plan, not to every master’s course in the country.

Official award information

FCT doctoral scholarships

DOCTORAL

Support: Competitive research scholarships support approved doctoral training under the applicable call.

Eligibility: Applicants must satisfy the call’s academic, residency and research-plan conditions.

Application: Applications follow the Foundation for Science and Technology’s published competition.

Conditions: This is research funding, not a general bachelor’s tuition discount. Award terms and selection criteria are call-specific.

Official award information

Camões language and culture support

LANGUAGE / CULTURE / RESEARCH

Support: Selected schemes support Portuguese-language and cultural study or related research.

Eligibility: Eligibility depends on the particular programme and applicant category.

Application: Applications follow Camões’ published scholarship announcements.

Conditions: These targeted awards should not be read as funding for any degree in Portugal.
