New Zealand
Eight universities and distinct applied study routes.
Study overview
New Zealand has eight universities alongside a wider applied tertiary sector. Universities offer general and specialist degrees; the qualification level, teaching campus and programme determine the route and cost of study.
Bachelor'S Tuition / Year
Education New Zealand's national portal gives this annual guide, updated March 2025. Medicine and veterinary science can cost more; it is not a confirmed 2027 quotation.
City Examples / Month
Rounded monthly equivalent of the portal's NZD 20,000-27,000 annual Auckland/Wellington examples. Dunedin is quoted separately; actual housing and length of stay matter.
Typical degree length: Bachelor’s commonly 3 years, with longer professional routes; master’s vary with credit load and entry preparation.
Fields: Agriculture; environmental science; engineering; computing; business; health; creative disciplines.
Study and admission
Degrees and entry routes
Eight universities share a national qualifications framework with a wider range of applied and specialist providers.
Qualifications and credit levels
New Zealand’s qualifications framework distinguishes the level of an award from its subject and duration. A bachelor’s degree is at level 7 and normally requires at least 360 credits, including substantial study at the final undergraduate level. Bachelor honours and postgraduate diplomas sit at level 8, master’s degrees at level 9, and doctorates at level 10. A graduate diploma is not a master’s qualification simply because it follows a first degree. Compare the award title, framework level, entry requirements and progression rights before choosing between programmes with similar names.
Master’s study and research preparation
A New Zealand master’s degree may contain 120, 180 or 240 credits or more, depending on its design and the applicant’s preparation. Shorter routes can require honours study, a postgraduate diploma or relevant professional experience beyond a first degree. Taught courses, applied projects and supervised research are combined differently across programmes. Applicants considering a later doctorate should examine the research component and admission regulations rather than assume every master’s provides the same preparation. A proposed supervisor and viable research topic may also be important for research admission.
Applying with an overseas qualification
Universities assess international school and university qualifications against their own published entry rules. Auckland, for example, distinguishes overseas school-leaver, foundation and other admission routes, with additional requirements for particular programmes. An acceptable school certificate establishes a possible route to entry, but required subjects, grades and selection processes still matter. Apply for the exact degree and intake, using the university’s current country guidance. Where direct entry is unavailable, check a foundation programme’s progression conditions, total cost and recognition by the intended university before committing to an extra year.
English evidence and specialist selection
English-language requirements belong to the admitting institution and programme. Auckland’s standard undergraduate benchmark is IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, but some degrees require higher results. The university also lists accepted alternative tests and qualification-based evidence; these are not interchangeable without checking the table. Medicine, clinical subjects and creative disciplines can have additional selection stages. A language result does not replace academic entry requirements, and meeting a published minimum does not by itself establish eligibility for every course. Check test format, validity period and component scores.
Costs and the student experience
Build the budget around a confirmed programme and teaching location, then plan accommodation and support before departure.
Tuition and the full annual budget
Education New Zealand publishes an indicative international bachelor’s fee range of NZ$35,000–55,000 a year, with medicine and veterinary science potentially higher. Its range was last updated in March 2025 and is a planning reference, not a 2027 quotation. Obtain a fee schedule for the intended intake and study load. Compare tuition with compulsory services charges, insurance, equipment and fieldwork costs. Eligible international PhD students can pay domestic tuition rates, but the residence and enrolment conditions matter. Professional doctorates and other postgraduate awards should not be assumed to receive identical treatment.
Accommodation and learner support
Housing choices include university residences and independently arranged accommodation. These have different meal arrangements, contract lengths, deposits and support, so compare the written offer rather than a headline weekly rent alone. New Zealand’s learner Code sets expectations for international student information, wellbeing and safety, including support before and during enrolment. Read the accommodation contract and ask the provider how to raise a concern or complaint. Establish the location of teaching before choosing a room; a multi-campus university may require study away from its best-known campus during part of a programme.
Learning and participation on campus
Degree credits represent a larger workload than the hours spent in classrooms. At Victoria University of Wellington, the typical full-time annual load is 120 points, with lectures complemented by tutorials, laboratories or studios according to the course. Timetables and course outlines explain attendance and assessment arrangements. Independent reading, preparation and assignments therefore need time in the weekly plan. Otago’s academic integrity guidance emphasises accurate attribution and identifies unauthorised copying or collaboration as misconduct. Consult course-specific rules before using generative tools, sharing assessed work or relying on material written by others.
Visa evidence and work conditions
The Fee Paying Student Visa requires an approved offer, tuition and living funds, insurance and other evidence. Tertiary students normally show NZD 20,000/year for living costs, plus onward-travel funds. Work may be permitted for up to 25 hours weekly and full-time in eligible breaks. From 16 November 2026, eligible Level 7 graduate-diploma holders with a prior bachelor’s degree can obtain a Post-Study Work Visa after completing the entire diploma full-time in New Zealand without credit transfer. Permission matches time studied, up to one year. Other qualifications have different rules; employment is not guaranteed.
Entrance and language assessments
English-language proficiency
Applies to: Applicants required to demonstrate English for the chosen programme
IELTS Academic and accepted alternatives are assessed against institution-specific overall and component thresholds. Auckland’s standard undergraduate example is 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5; higher programme requirements apply.
Programme-specific selection
Applies to: Programmes with additional academic, clinical or creative entry requirements
Consult the current degree page for any required portfolio, audition, interview, subject preparation or admission test. New Zealand does not use a single universal entrance examination for every international university applicant.
Scholarships and funding routes
Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships
Support: Full academic awards include tuition, living support, establishment support, approved travel and insurance, with specified additional support.
Eligibility: Citizens of participating countries meeting residence, age, academic, subject and other scheme conditions; postgraduate applicants normally need relevant work experience.
Application: Use the Manaaki country and eligibility tools, then the official application process for the applicable round.
Conditions: Eligibility is not worldwide. Scholars are expected to contribute to their home country’s development for at least two years after study; family expenses and every personal cost are not automatically covered.
University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship
Support: A tuition credit of up to 25% of fees for the first two semesters, under the regulations available in September 2026.
Eligibility: Eligible master’s offer and Admissions GPE of at least 7.0; restrictions include prior New Zealand tertiary study, distance study and specified management programmes.
Application: Eligible offer holders are invited to complete a supplementary form for the relevant round; follow the current invitation timetable.
Conditions: The present scheme is for master’s study. Older descriptions of a NZ$10,000 award must not be assumed current. Full-time study and two consecutive semesters are required, with repayment conditions.
University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship
Support: The published scheme provides an annual NZ$34,128 stipend and tuition support at the domestic rate for up to 36 months.
Eligibility: Domestic and international applicants, usually undertaking their first doctorate; selection considers academic merit and research potential.
Application: Apply through eVision with the required departmental assessment for a published scholarship consideration round.
Conditions: Otago states that its doctoral scholarship programme is under review. Recheck the current route and amount. Student services fees and insurance are excluded; professional-doctorate tuition support is capped at the domestic rate.
