Hungary
English-taught degrees, research cities and competitive scholarship routes
Study overview
Hungary offers international programmes in medicine, engineering, computing, business, sciences and the arts. Budapest and regional university cities differ in housing costs and scale. Entry assessments and programme language are determined by the university and the course.
Elte Computing Example / Year
Two semesters at the published EUR 3,200 semester fee for ELTE’s English-taught Computer Science BSc. Application fees and living expenses are additional.
Planning Scenario / Month
Editorial shared-housing scenario. The national calculator lists shared-flat costs of HUF 80,000–140,000 including utilities; food, transport and personal costs complete the budget.
Typical degree length: Bachelor’s: usually 3–4 years.
Master’s: usually 1–2 years.
General medicine: 6 years.
Fields: Medicine, engineering, computing, business, agriculture, sciences, music and design.
Study and admission
Education, entry and student life
The structure of study, the application route and the practical decisions behind it.
A course-specific choice
English-taught degrees include general academic subjects and professional programmes. Bachelor’s and master’s routes coexist with undivided degrees, such as medicine. A foundation or preparatory course can develop language or subject knowledge, but progression conditions belong to that programme; it should not be treated as an unconditional degree offer.
Entry tests and interviews
International admission is handled through the chosen university or a scholarship route. Faculties may assess mathematics, biology, chemistry, English or other relevant preparation. Tests can be followed by an interview. There is no single test score that secures admission across all Hungarian institutions and subjects.
A concrete computing example
ELTE’s English Computer Science BSc lasts six semesters. The published tuition is EUR 3,200 per semester, plus a separate application fee. Its admission process includes an assessment and interview. The example shows why a family needs the degree length, per-semester fee and admission charges together: a semester price alone is not an annual budget.

Medicine and professional recognition
English-medium medical teaching does not remove the need to communicate with patients during clinical training. The destination programme, clinical exposure, internship and registration route all matter. Indian applicants also need to satisfy the National Medical Commission’s foreign-medical-graduate requirements; the medicine chapter explains why admission abroad and eligibility to practise in India are separate decisions.

Budapest or a regional city
The national living-cost calculator distinguishes Budapest from Debrecen, Győr, Miskolc, Pécs and Szeged. Its shared-flat examples range from HUF 80,000 to 140,000 monthly including utilities. The wider monthly scenario in this chapter adds routine living expenditure; a private flat or a high-spending lifestyle changes the total.

How Stipendium Hungaricum works
Applicants select eligible programmes under the arrangements with their sending partner. Partner nomination and host-university assessment are separate parts of the process. Published benefits include tuition support, a stipend, accommodation support and health coverage. The award is competitive, and its financial contributions may not cover the recipient’s complete living budget.

From selection to enrolment
An offer can remain conditional on final documents, fee payment or other requirements. Immigration approval, insurance and accommodation arrangements follow their own processes. University orientation and student support help with academic registration and settling in; language learning can also make daily life and professional placements easier.

Scholarships and funding routes
Stipendium Hungaricum
Support: Published benefits include tuition support, a stipend, accommodation contribution and health coverage.
Eligibility: Available fields and degree levels depend on the sending partner and programme agreement.
Application: Applicants use the scheme’s portal and meet sending-partner nomination requirements where applicable.
Conditions: Award contributions do not necessarily cover all living expenses. Future calls set their own dates and terms.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
Support: Selected joint master’s programmes offer competitive scholarships towards participation and living costs.
Eligibility: Applicants normally hold a bachelor’s degree or are completing one before the programme begins.
Application: Applications go to the individual consortium, which publishes its own selection process.
Conditions: An award applies to a named joint programme and its mobility plan, not to every master’s course in the country.
Bilateral State Scholarships
Support: Support is offered through particular bilateral or country-specific calls.
Eligibility: Nationality, previous study and activity type determine the applicable route.
Application: Applications follow Tempus Public Foundation and any relevant home-country nomination process.
Conditions: Full-degree, partial-study and research opportunities have different conditions; availability is not uniform across countries.
