University degrees and single-cycle medical education.

Open country chapter in the book (printed p. 96)

Study overview

Georgia offers business, technology, social-science and medical study through public and private institutions. Medicine is a six-year single-cycle qualification. The National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement records institutional authorisation and programme accreditation within Georgia’s quality-assurance system.

Qualifications and provision

Authorised institutions offer a wider subject range than medicine, including newer three-year English-language bachelor’s programmes.

Bachelor’s, master’s and integrated degrees

Georgia uses bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, alongside integrated professional qualifications. Programme duration is not identical across the current bachelor’s catalogue: three-year and four-year routes are both present. International Black Sea University, for example, publishes a three-year, 180-credit English-language Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence degree. Credits follow the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. Medicine follows a separate integrated structure of six years and 360 credits; dentistry normally comprises five years and 300 credits. A generic four-year bachelor’s label therefore does not accurately describe every programme.

Official references

Authorisation and accreditation

The National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement is Georgia’s higher-education quality authority. Institutional authorisation establishes whether a provider is entitled to operate as a higher-education institution and issue recognised qualifications within its authorised scope. Programme accreditation is a separate quality process applied to the educational programme. A provider’s presence on the authorised list therefore does not, by itself, describe every course’s current accreditation status. The regulator publishes institutional decisions and programme information separately, including the applicable terms and conditions of its quality decisions.

Computing, business and creative subjects

International provision extends beyond health sciences. Caucasus University’s bachelor’s catalogue includes computing and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, business, diplomacy, architecture and graphic design, with the teaching language and duration identified for individual programmes. Its catalogue also contains international joint-degree routes. Kutaisi International University publishes English-language and bilingual bachelor’s admission arrangements in areas including computing, management, mathematics and design. These examples show the importance of the actual programme specification: one university can offer courses with different credit totals, fee currencies, partner arrangements and academic entry expectations.

The medical curriculum and its limits

Tbilisi State Medical University’s English-medium Medical Doctor programme comprises six academic years, twelve semesters and 360 European credits. Its curriculum brings together biomedical foundations, clinical learning and professional competencies. A medical-school catalogue describes the academic qualification; it does not award a licence to practise abroad. The term ‘MD’ in this context denotes an integrated entry-to-medicine qualification, rather than necessarily a postgraduate research doctorate. Recognition for professional registration remains a separate process in the country where the graduate intends to practise.

Official references

Admission and student costs

Foreign-school applicants can use specified national-examination exemptions, followed by institutional assessment and qualification recognition.

The foreign-qualification pathway

Georgia provides statutory routes through which eligible foreign-educated applicants can enrol without the Unified National Examinations used in the standard domestic admission system. Eligibility depends on citizenship and educational history under the applicable category; it is not a blanket exemption for every applicant with a foreign passport. Tbilisi State University describes a sequence involving the faculty’s assessment, institutional consent, recognition of foreign education and the relevant ministry decision. Admission to a particular programme therefore combines national administrative recognition with the university’s academic requirements.

Official references

Documents and institutional assessment

Tbilisi State University’s international application information distinguishes identity documents, the qualifying diploma and transcript, language evidence and programme-specific assessment. Foreign educational documents are submitted with the required Georgian translation and notarisation for the recognition procedure. A faculty may conduct an examination where its programme requires one. The university’s consent precedes the national recognition and enrolment stages described in its procedure. An application acknowledgement, a conditional faculty decision and final student registration are therefore different administrative events, rather than interchangeable forms of an unconditional admission offer.

A named tuition and language example

For its published 2026–27 foreign-citizen bachelor’s intake, Kutaisi International University lists annual tuition of EUR 5,500 for Computer Science and Management, EUR 1,000 for Mathematics and Applications, and EUR 4,000 for Design. Its published English evidence begins at B1 level and is accompanied by an online interview. These are programme-specific terms, not a national Georgian minimum or fee schedule. The university states that payment is made in Georgian lari using the National Bank exchange rate applicable at payment.

Official references

Tbilisi rent and everyday spending

The Georgian Institute of Public Affairs gives a June 2026 illustration of central Tbilisi apartment rent at approximately GEL 1,000–1,500 a month and food and daily expenditure at GEL 600–700. Taken together, those two components amount to GEL 1,600–2,200 before any additional charges not covered by the estimate. The institution states that it does not provide dormitory accommodation. This is a local rental example, not a guaranteed student-housing tariff. Sharing an apartment changes the per-person calculation, while deposits and initial household purchases affect arrival costs.

Entrance and language assessments

Unified National Examinations

Applies to: Standard domestic bachelor’s admission; specified foreign-route exemptions

Eligible foreign-educated applicants can use a statutory exemption route. Citizenship and schooling conditions determine eligibility; exemption does not remove institutional assessment.

Common Master’s Examination

Applies to: Standard master’s route; specified exemptions

Georgia provides exemption categories for certain foreign-educated applicants. Universities can retain their own academic and language assessments for the chosen master’s programme.

https://mes.gov.ge/oldmes/content.php?id=1129&lang=eng

English certificate and interview

Applies to: Kutaisi International University foreign bachelor’s intake

The published route uses English evidence from B1 level plus an online interview. Other Georgian programmes can require a higher level or different accepted evidence.

Faculty assessment

Applies to: Programme-specific international applicants

Tbilisi State University can require a faculty examination as part of its international admission assessment. This is separate from the national recognition of the school qualification.
