STUDENT POPULATION CONTEXT

129,764

2025/26

International degree students taking bachelor’s or master’s programmes in publicly funded Dutch higher education.

What this figure includes

Degree mobility, not all exchanges, private education, doctoral researchers or all foreign residents. Do not substitute the older 131,004 figure from 2024/25.

This is not a count of new arrivals and is not directly comparable with every other country.

TUITION

Non-EU bachelor’s tuition: €9,000–€20,000/year

Institution and course fees apply. Statutory EU/eligible-student fees are a separate regime.

LIVING COSTS

Indicative living: €1,000–€1,500/month

Housing availability and city have a major effect; the underlying component table cites 2024 research, not a fresh 2026 survey.

SOURCE-LINKED APPLICATION GUIDES

Go deeper into Netherlands.

Your Netherlands application, step by step.

Official starting points and application framework; not a complete university or programme catalogue.

Use the official international-study finder, then confirm the language of the particular programme and intake with the institution. An English programme in a previous year is not proof for a future intake.

01Check the current programme and language

Review the curriculum, degree type, entry qualifications and teaching language on the institution’s current programme page. Keep the exact campus and intake in your shortlist.

  • Distinguish a whole English degree from a single English track.
  • Check additional language requirements for placements or professional practice.
02Follow both registration and admission steps

Many applications begin in Studielink, but the institution may require its own documents or selection process. Some international applicants use a different route.

  • Follow the institution’s instructions for your qualification and nationality.
  • Check whether the course has a numerus fixus selection process and an earlier deadline.
  • Treat national headline dates as a starting point; programme deadlines and exceptions control.
03Track selection, funding and housing

Create separate tasks for submitting documents, completing selection activities, accepting an offer and applying for funding. Start accommodation research while the application is progressing.

  • Record the institution’s actual offer-response deadline.
  • Check deadlines for applicants who need immigration processing.
04Use the recognised-sponsor immigration route

If a Dutch student residence permit is required, the recognised sponsoring institution applies through the IND process. An entry visa may also be required depending on nationality and circumstances.

  • Ask the institution for its immigration document and payment deadlines.
  • Use the IND page for current financial, document and study conditions.

Build your own timeline

Relative planning stages; institution and applicant-specific deadlines must be checked.

Record course, scholarship, test, document, deposit and visa dates separately. No individual 2027 intake deadline is confirmed by this overview.

Exams to research

These are research links, not a statement that every institution accepts or requires each exam. Check the exact programme, intake, test version, minimum component scores and visa rules.

Coverage and source notes
  • No individual 2027 English programme availability is confirmed here.
  • Studyfinder results are dynamic; individual programme facts require the institution page.

Before you decide

Look at both
sides of the route.

Why students consider Netherlands

  • Business and technology
  • Applied-science routes
  • Research-led programmes
  • International classrooms

What needs careful planning

  • Institution type
  • Entry equivalency
  • Housing pressure
  • Total annual cost

What the brochure rarely explains

Plan the whole
student journey.

Admission is one milestone. The right decision also accounts for money, documentation, learning style and life after graduation.

01

Two university types

Research universities and universities of applied sciences have different teaching styles and progression routes; neither label should be chosen blindly.

02

Selective programmes

Numerus fixus and other selective programmes can have early deadlines and additional selection stages.

03

Housing pressure

Accommodation can be one of the hardest parts of the route and should be treated as a core decision factor.

Your application route

From research
to visa file.

  1. 01

Choose between research-led and applied-science learning styles.

  2. 02

Confirm diploma equivalency and subject prerequisites.

  3. 03

Complete Studielink and institution-specific steps by the correct deadline.

  4. 04

Begin housing planning as early as the university permits.

First answer: should you apply?

The useful question is not only “Can I get an offer?” It is whether the academic, financial and career logic remains strong after the excitement of admission.

What is a university of applied sciences?+

It usually emphasises practical teaching, projects and professional preparation. Students should compare it with a research university based on learning goals.
