INDIAN CITIZENS / OCI / OVERSEAS RESIDENTS

Plan the return
before the departure.

For a student who may practise in India, admission abroad is only one part of the decision. Check the course, internship and registration route together before paying.

Which applicant are you?

Indian origin describes a family background, not a single legal category. An Indian citizen living in Oman, an OCI cardholder and a foreign citizen without OCI may have different eligibility and registration routes. Record citizenship, OCI status, residence, school qualification and intended country of practice separately.

Before, during and after your degree.

  1. Before admission

Resolve school eligibility and NEET requirements, then obtain the exact curriculum, teaching language, internship offer and local-registration conditions.

  2. During the course

Keep dated records of attendance, clinical placements and training locations. Assess a proposed transfer or overseas elective before changing the agreed pathway.

  3. After graduation

Complete the required foreign internship and registration conditions, the applicable Indian examination and supervised Indian internship, then the registration process.

NEET is separate from the foreign entrance test.

NMC’s overseas-study guidance requires Indian citizens and OCI applicants starting a foreign primary medical qualification from May 2018 to qualify NEET. The qualifying result functions as the eligibility certificate when the underlying academic criteria are also met. Its stated overseas-study validity is three years from the result, including a linked premedical or language course followed by medicine.

Qualifying NEET does not replace IMAT, UCAT or a university’s own selection. Equally, passing a foreign university’s entrance test does not replace the Indian requirement. Living or attending school in Oman does not by itself remove the citizenship-based rule.

The course conditions to assess.

The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 set conditions for the cohorts they cover. They include:

  • At least 54 months of medical study, covering the prescribed subjects.
  • At least 12 months of internship at the same foreign medical institution.
  • English as the teaching medium.
  • Registration with the relevant foreign professional body, with a licence at par with that granted to citizens of the awarding country.
  • The course, training and internship/clerkship in the same institution and country, not split across India or a third country.
  • Completion within ten years, plus the required Indian examination and a separate supervised internship in India of at least 12 months.

The regulations have cohort and exemption provisions. Students already enrolled or qualified before the relevant 18 November 2021 commencement need the rules and later directions applicable to their own situation; do not apply a new-entrant checklist retrospectively without reviewing that scope.

A clinical year is not automatically the required internship.

The NMC explanatory FAQ distinguishes the minimum medical-course period from the internship. A programme can have clinical rotations and still leave a separate internship condition unresolved. Ask for the actual start and end dates, institution, supervision, rotations, certificate and access for your nationality.

A seven-month placement, 310 days of practice or a 48-week practical year should not be relabelled as a confirmed twelve-month internship. Nor does a premedical science degree automatically turn a four-year MD into 54 months of medical study. The relevant regulator must assess the actual structure.

A university’s offer to arrange an internship is different from an available, eligible place. Obtain both the academic evidence and the local legal route to registration before relying on it.

Check school eligibility as well as the test result.

The October 2026 FMGE bulletin specifically refers applicants using NEET in place of an eligibility certificate to the relevant school-admission conditions, including age, subject marks and evidence for any reserved-category relaxation. It warns that passing the examination does not cure an underlying eligibility failure.

School systems, additional subjects, older qualifications and reserved-category claims need the correct rule for the applicant. Keep original Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English results and any relevant equivalence/category documents. A university’s willingness to admit you is not a decision on Indian eligibility.

FMGE, NExT and the year you graduate.

NBEMS has an October 2026 FMGE bulletin. NMC’s regulations index also lists NExT regulations and the notice deferring the examination. Do not treat a forecast NExT launch as a confirmed exam schedule for someone entering medicine in 2027 and graduating years later.

Plan for the examination and internship requirements that legally apply when you seek registration, and keep checking dated official notices during the degree.

The five-country screening exception has conditions.

The NMC wording concerns a primary medical qualification from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK or the US, a postgraduate medical qualification within that listed group, and recognition for enrolment as a practitioner in the relevant country. A UK MBBS or US MD alone does not establish the exception. Ireland is not included in that five-country list.

This is a screening-test provision, not a blanket assurance that every other condition for a future applicant disappears. A UK-awarded course taught abroad also needs assessment of the actual award and training locations.

What a medical-school listing can—and cannot—tell you.

NMC states that it does not endorse a list of overseas MBBS institutions. The World Directory is useful for finding the exact school, programme and campus, but inclusion is not an individual decision that you qualify to practise in India. Match the award, training history and regulator requirements to your own route.

Reviewed 8 October 2026. This guide explains the cited rules and practical questions; the medical regulator decides eligibility for the individual qualification and applicant.
