Read the sentence’s structure
Use grammar and transitions to express the intended relationship.
The idea
First identify the subject and verb. Then ask whether the next idea adds, contrasts, exemplifies or results from the previous idea.
A method to try
- Ignore intervening phrases when finding the subject.
- Paraphrase the logical relationship before choosing a transition.
Follow the reasoning.
Complete: “The box of replacement lenses ___ on the upper shelf.” Then choose a transition: “The first design was too heavy. ___, the team reduced the frame’s mass.”
- The subject is box. Lenses is inside the phrase of replacement lenses, so the singular verb is is.
- The second sentence describes a response to the problem, so a result transition such as therefore fits. A contrast transition would express a different relationship.
- Read the completed sentences aloud, but use sentence structure and meaning as your final check. A sentence can sound familiar while still having the wrong subject–verb relationship.
Think it through first.
In “The list of participants is complete,” which word controls the singular verb?
Show the explanation
List.
Of participants modifies list; it does not replace the singular head of the subject.
Make it your own
After reading, explain the method in your own words and identify the condition that makes it valid. Then try the linked starter practice without referring back to the worked example. Review the reasoning behind an error before repeating the same item; remembering an answer is different from being able to solve a new problem.
