LESSON 4 OF 4 · FREE · ABOUT 5 MINUTES

Build a repeatable problem-solving method

Separate givens, assumptions and the requested quantity before solving.

The idea

A correct calculation begins with a correct model. State the information given, identify the requested quantity and units, then check whether the result is plausible.

A method to try

  1. Write down the known values and any conditions such as independence or complete dominance.
  2. Name the quantity requested, including its unit or denominator.
  3. Choose a rule that connects the known and unknown values.
  4. Calculate, check the unit and explain why a tempting alternative is wrong.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Follow the reasoning.

A 9 V supply drives a steady current of 0.50 A for 2 minutes. How much energy is transferred?

  1. Power P = VI = 9 × 0.50 = 4.5 W.
  2. Convert 2 minutes to 120 seconds.
  3. Energy E = Pt = 4.5 × 120 = 540 J.
CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Think it through first.

The same device runs for 30 seconds. How much energy is transferred?

Show the explanation

135 J

At unchanged power, E = 4.5 W × 30 s = 135 J. Energy scales with duration.

Make it your own

Choose a missed question and write one sentence describing the decision you would change next time.
