1. Identify the course route and your applicant category
Use this guide for undergraduate courses advertised through UCAS for 2027 entry. International applicants use the same central application service, while universities decide whether an applicant meets their course requirements. Confirm the route on the exact programme page: a conservatoire, part-time course, foundation provider or other specialist route may use a different process or timetable.
Record your citizenships, residence history, immigration status and the country and awarding body of your qualifications separately. They answer different questions. A British school qualification does not establish UK home-fee status, and living outside the UK does not by itself describe every visa situation. Ask the university for the fee assessment relevant to your circumstances and use GOV.UK for immigration eligibility.
- Decide whether you are applying through a school or registered centre, or independently; agree who supplies the reference.
- For deferred entry, confirm that the particular course accepts it and select the intended start year correctly.
- Keep admission, student finance, scholarships and immigration as separate tasks in your plan.
2. Build a shortlist around the qualification you actually hold
Universities set course-specific requirements. Compare your awarding body, qualification level, subjects and achieved or predicted grades with the institution's international guidance. If the page shows UK qualifications or Tariff points, ask how your own award is considered rather than converting it yourself. Meeting a stated minimum allows consideration; it is not a promise of an offer.
Check English-language evidence alongside academic eligibility. Accepted tests, component scores, validity periods and exemptions can differ between courses. A school's English-medium letter is useful only where the university accepts it. Admission evidence and Student-visa evidence must also fit the applicable rules: a degree-level higher education provider can assess English itself for visa purposes, so a UKVI test is not automatically required of every applicant.
- You can normally choose up to five courses. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary subjects have four-choice restrictions; Oxford/Cambridge choices also have special rules.
- Make a comparison sheet with academic requirements, language evidence, total cost and one reason the curriculum suits you.
- Check admissions-test registration, portfolio and interview arrangements before selecting a course; these may require action before the UCAS deadline.
3. Use the confirmed 2027 dates, including the time zone
Completed 2027 applications could be sent from 1 September 2026. The early equal-consideration deadline is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses. For most other undergraduate courses it is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Check the individual course listing for exceptions.
Equal consideration means an on-time application receives the same consideration as other on-time applications, not that a place is reserved. A school or college may need your application earlier to check it and add the reference. Treat the UCAS timestamp as the arrival deadline, not the moment to start payment or contact your referee.
- Record deadlines in UK time and convert them for your location, allowing for seasonal clock changes.
- 25 February 2027: Extra opens for eligible applicants; 1 July is the final day to add an Extra choice.
- 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time: applications received after this point enter Clearing; Clearing opens on 2 July.
- 23 September 2027, 18:00 UK time: final UCAS application deadline. These later dates do not guarantee course vacancies or enough visa time.
4. Assemble records before completing the application
Create your UCAS Hub account using contact details you will retain after leaving school. Match your name to official records and enter your actual qualification names and results. UCAS asks for the complete record from secondary education onwards, including current qualifications, unsuccessful results and retakes. If a qualification is difficult to find, consult your examinations officer or UCAS guidance instead of choosing a similar but incorrect award.
The 2027 application includes optional supporting-document uploads in relevant sections. These can help universities understand achieved qualifications and other evidence, but they do not replace the application fields. UCAS says declining optional uploads does not disadvantage an application. A university may still request records directly through its own portal.
- Prepare a document index: qualification, issuer, examination date, result status and where the original is held.
- Check scans or photographs are readable and belong to the correct qualification and applicant.
- For requested translations, follow the university's instructions and retain the original-language document.
- Review uploads before submission: UCAS does not permit post-submission changes to those uploaded documents.
5. Write the three responses and arrange the reference early
For 2027 entry, the personal statement follows the three-question format introduced for 2026. Explain your motivation for the subject, how your formal studies prepared you, and what relevant preparation you undertook outside education. Each response needs at least 350 characters; together they must fit within 4,000 characters including spaces. Admissions teams read the answers together, so use each experience once and explain what it taught you.
Choose evidence you can discuss: a project you completed, a problem you investigated, reading that changed your view, or responsibilities that developed relevant skills. For example, describe the question your science project tested and how you interpreted the result, rather than only listing its title. Keep the account accurate and in your own voice.
- Draft outside the application, check the character counts, then proofread the pasted version.
- Ask a suitable referee in advance; a family member or friend is not an appropriate UCAS referee.
- Agree how pending qualifications and predicted grades will be handled with your school or referee.
- Provide your referee with your intended subject, education record and an earlier working deadline.
6. Pay the correct cycle fee and confirm successful submission
The UCAS Undergraduate application fee for 2027 entry is £34.50 for up to five choices. It is an application-service charge, separate from tuition, admissions tests and any university deposit. UCAS provides eligibility-based fee waivers, including for qualifying free-school-meal recipients and, from 2027 entry, eligible care leavers. Use the current waiver instructions rather than assuming every applicant in financial difficulty is exempt.
Before submission, check the course, campus, start year, point of entry and every required field. If a centre is submitting for you, handing it to the centre is not the same as receipt by UCAS. Confirm the final status and save your application identifier. Afterward, read messages from both UCAS and each university: assessment bookings, interviews or document requests may be handled separately.
- Keep a copy of your final application and the submission or payment confirmation.
- Use the official UCAS account and university portals for application actions.
- Respond to a missing-document request by the stated deadline; do not assume an on-time UCAS submission completes every later requirement.
7. Manage offers, results and any later application route
Read each offer as a set of conditions, including subjects, grades, English evidence and document dates. UCAS allows one firm choice and, where appropriate, one insurance choice. An insurance offer is a fallback if the firm conditions are not met; it is worth choosing only if its course, conditions and cost also work for you.
Your reply deadline depends on when the final university decision arrives. For 2027, UCAS lists 5 May for last decisions received by 31 March, 2 June for those received by 12 May, and 21 July for those received by 14 July; Extra has exceptions to the first two groups. The deadline displayed in your own application is the one to act on. Missing it can result in offers being declined.
- Check whether UCAS receives your examination results automatically or the university needs them from you or the awarding body.
- If applying late, contact the university about vacancies before spending time on a choice. International status does not guarantee late consideration.
- If you used all five choices and hold no offers, check Extra eligibility. Clearing is a separate route for eligible applicants and available places.
- Keep scholarship acceptance and accommodation deadlines alongside the UCAS reply date.
8. Move from an offer to a funded, lawful start
Request the tuition charge for your assessed fee category and intended academic year. Build a full budget including accommodation, deposits, travel, insurance or health charges, equipment and living costs. A scholarship application is not confirmed funding, and paying a deposit does not itself guarantee a visa. Read refund conditions before committing money.
If you need a Student visa, follow the university's sponsorship process. A licensed sponsor issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS, used in the visa application; the UCAS offer alone is not a CAS. GOV.UK currently permits applications from outside the UK up to six months before the course starts. The Student-visa application fee checked on 6 October 2026 is £558, with the healthcare surcharge separate. Recheck these charges and the financial-evidence rules when you apply in 2027.
- Confirm whether your existing immigration permission already permits the proposed study; applicants do not all need the same route.
- Follow the current official checklist for financial evidence, English, identity and any additional documents relevant to you.
- Coordinate final academic documents, CAS, housing and the university's latest arrival date.
- This guide confirms the listed UCAS 2027 dates and fee; it does not certify every university's 2027 tuition, scholarship or immigration deadline.
