01 / IB & A LEVELS

Recognised school qualification

Full IB Diploma or a qualifying A-level combination

POSSIBLE ROUTE

Direct degree application

IB: general or subject-restricted access. Qualifying A levels: subject-restricted access.

Which qualifications qualify?

IB: the examination year, six subjects, levels and grades matter. Individual IB course certificates are not the full diploma.

GCE / covered International A levels: three independent general-education A levels at C or above, with the required subject combination. AS levels and GCSE/IGCSE alone do not provide this route.

No Studienkolleg needed if your qualification provides the required direct access.

02 / INDIAN CLASS XII

Choose the relevant pathway

Two distinct routes in APS India’s Winter 2026/27 notice

ROUTE A

Studienkolleg + FSP

Usually one preparatory year, then pass the subject-specific assessment.

OR
ROUTE B

One successful bachelor year

Successful regular degree study at a recognised institution → possible direct access in the same or a closely related field.

Marks, APS and the JEE route

APS India’s 23 February 2026 notice requires at least 70% overall in Class XII for its two listed routes, with APS and the relevant additional conditions. It applies from Winter 2026/27; the evaluation change began 15 March 2026. Previously issued APS certificates remain valid. Universities decide admission.

Route B does not automatically add an FSP or transfer you into year two. Successful study, subject access and credit transfer are separate checks.

JEE is a separate possibility: uni-assist requires successful Main and Advanced results for that route. Main alone is insufficient. Confirm subject restrictions and the current APS assessment; the 70% notice does not resolve every JEE case.

Preparation can require German even when the later degree is taught in English.

03 / OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Match the exact award

US diplomas, national school certificates and vocational awards

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFICATION CHECK

Direct access, preparation or further study

The result depends on your actual certificate and academic record. Preparation is not automatically available to everyone.

US, BTEC, SABIS and other systems

US high-school diploma: course/GPA requirements and recognised AP combinations matter. A diploma alone does not establish direct degree access.

BTEC or a school using SABIS: give the university the exact award, awarding body and complete record. A school brand is not a single qualification.

Pakistani, Philippine and Gulf national certificates each have their own evaluation. Do not apply the Indian Class XII route to every 12-year system or assume only two public universities accept an award.

Obtain a qualification assessment before paying for a foundation course.

YOUR NEXT STAGE

Apply for the degree that fits your recognised route.

Check course prerequisites, teaching language and intake dates. Complete APS or VPD where required, submit the university application, then meet offer and visa conditions. Academic access is not an admission offer.

Plan the costs and what comes after graduation

Public does not always mean zero tuition. Many public bachelor’s courses charge no tuition, but exceptions include non-EU fees in Baden-Württemberg and some Bavarian institutions. Semester contributions and living costs remain. DAAD cost guidance ↗

After a German degree: eligible third-country graduates can apply for up to 18 months to seek qualified employment, with proof of graduation, insurance and livelihood. This is not automatic permanent residence. Official post-study rules ↗

01

Find your route before you book a foundation year

Germany does not require every international applicant to complete Studienkolleg. Your school qualification, examination subjects and successful prior university study determine which academic route may be available. Direct access means you can be considered for a degree without the preparatory route; it does not mean you already have a place.

The familiar “12 years versus 13 years” explanation is only a shortcut, not an eligibility rule. Germany assesses the recognised qualification and its content. A qualifying IB or A-level combination, a relevant university-study route or another recognised qualification may provide direct access without the same preparation. Count the actual requirements, not just school years.

Start with the certificate you will use for entry. Citizenship and where you currently live are separate details. An Indian citizen with an IB Diploma, a CBSE student living in Oman and a student with a US high-school diploma do not automatically follow the same academic rules.

  • Record the qualification title, awarding body, country or education system, examination year, subjects and grades.
  • Add every completed university semester, awarding institution and subject studied.
  • Choose the exact German degree, teaching language and intended intake before checking recognition.

02

Understand the four possible answers

The official check may indicate direct general access, direct access limited to a subject area, eligibility for a preparatory course, or insufficient evidence/qualification for the proposed route. These are different outcomes. A preparatory course is not automatically available to everyone who falls short of direct entry.

  • General access: check the programme’s remaining academic, language and selection conditions.
  • Subject-restricted access: ask whether the exact degree falls within the permitted field.
  • Preparatory access: check the correct Studienkolleg and final assessment route.
  • Unclear or ineligible: send the complete education history to the university before paying a course provider.

Indian Class XII: what changed for Winter 2026/27

APS India’s notice dated 23 February 2026 sets a 70% minimum overall Class XII result for its two specified undergraduate pathways from Winter 2026/27. The evaluation change took effect on 15 March 2026. The threshold means 70% of the maximum achievable overall marks, regardless of the examining board.

The first pathway combines Class XII with APS for subject-restricted access through Studienkolleg. The second adds a successfully completed academic year in a regular bachelor’s programme at a recognised institution, allowing consideration for direct access in the previous field and closely related subjects.

Previously issued APS certificates remain valid. That does not override the receiving university’s admission decision for a later intake. Applications submitted before 15 March 2026 fall under the notice’s stated transition. If this affects you, ask the university to assess your records and intended intake together.

04

One bachelor year: what it can and cannot do

For the prior-study route, enrolment alone is not enough: you need successful completion of the required academic year. Keep the full first-year results and recognition evidence. A polytechnic or vocational certificate by itself is not equivalent to two completed bachelor semesters in the APS India checklist.

Eligibility through prior study and transfer of credits are separate decisions. You do not automatically enter year two in Germany. Ask the university whether you must apply to the first semester or a higher semester, and which completed modules it will recognise.

If your school qualification and university year come from different education systems, obtain an individual assessment. The general India summary is not evidence that a year in any third country will be accepted. Do not choose an unrelated bachelor’s subject simply to accumulate a year.

  • Save the official transcript, course/module descriptions and degree-level grading scale.
  • Check the recognition of the awarding institution and the specific qualification, not just the teaching centre’s name.
  • Ask for a written answer on the permitted subject field and any separate credit-transfer process.

JEE Main is not the JEE Advanced route

DAAD India describes a JEE Advanced rank as a possible route to direct subject-specific applications in technology and natural sciences. uni-assist’s India instructions say JEE results matter for this route only when the applicant has successfully passed both Main and Advanced. Qualifying through Main to sit Advanced is not the same as passing Advanced.

APS has a separate JEE checklist requesting Main and Advanced proof and the admit card. It is not a promise of admission, a universal German JEE rank cutoff or permission to study an unrelated subject.

The February 2026 70% notice does not expressly explain the separate JEE route. We therefore do not claim either a JEE exemption from that threshold or that the threshold automatically extends to every JEE case. Ask APS and the receiving university about the current evaluation for your exact results before relying on this route.

Studienkolleg: choose the right preparation

Studienkolleg normally provides a year of academic and language preparation, followed by the Feststellungsprüfung, or FSP. Admission to the preparation usually includes an entrance test. The eventual subject area matters: a preparation course is not a general pass into every degree.

University focus courses commonly include T for technical, mathematical and scientific subjects, M for medical/biological subjects, W for economics/social sciences, and G or S for humanities/languages. Universities of applied sciences use their own focus-course categories. Verify the mapping with the institution rather than selecting by the letter alone.

  • Check the receiving degree’s accepted FSP subject area and issuing institution.
  • A Fachhochschule FSP is normally limited to universities of applied sciences; a Universität FSP can qualify for both institution types within its subject scope.
  • Some institutions offer an external FSP without attending their full course; eligibility, preparation and dates must be checked separately.
  • Passing the FSP establishes the relevant academic access; you still complete the degree application and selection.

An English bachelor can still have a German preparatory stage

uni-assist says Studienkolleg teaching is generally in German and applicants normally need German even when the later bachelor is taught in English. Required levels, accepted certificates and entry tests vary. Do not assume that IELTS replaces a Studienkolleg’s German-language requirement.

For the degree itself, confirm the language of the complete programme and accepted evidence. An English website, an English programme title or a medium-of-instruction letter does not by itself prove that you meet admission rules.

  • Check the preparatory course and degree language requirements separately.
  • Verify compulsory modules, placements and any language requirements introduced later in the degree.
  • Save the institution’s exact certificate requirements and the date by which they must be met.

IB Diploma: the examination year and subjects matter

An IB Diploma can support direct general or subject-restricted access when the German recognition conditions are met. It is not the same as individual IB course certificates. Check the applicable examination-year rules: DAAD distinguishes the rules through 2024 from those for examinations from 2025.

The detailed evaluation considers the six-subject combination, Higher/Standard Levels, languages, science, mathematics and grades. Mathematics at Standard Level can affect subject access; named school-list exceptions also exist. Ask for an assessment of your actual diploma instead of assuming that every IB combination qualifies for every subject.

  • Keep the IBO-issued final qualification and the last two years’ school reports showing subjects and levels.
  • For applications before the paper diploma arrives, follow the institution’s accepted official-results procedure.
  • Use the IB route even when your citizenship or residence is different from your school’s country.

A levels: match the subjects to the German degree

For UK GCE and the covered International A levels, DAAD describes direct subject-restricted access based on three independent general-education A levels at grade C or better, with the required subject combination. Mathematics/technical study needs mathematics and another specified science or computing subject; other fields have different combinations.

AS levels and GCSE/IGCSE alone do not provide this access. National qualifications in other countries using a British-derived system may have different evaluation rules. Use the appropriate country entry rather than copying the UK rule.

uni-assist does not accept school-predicted grades as the final application evidence. Its UK guidance accepts specified official Statements of Results before the final award certificate. Check whether your real results will be available before your programme’s deadline.

US, European and other school systems

A US high-school diploma is assessed with its detailed academic record; an SAT score is not a universal substitute for German entrance requirements. DAAD’s June 2025 guide distinguishes school-course/GPA conditions and AP-based access routes. Applicants with US diplomas awarded outside the US should also use uni-assist’s special international-qualification guidance.

DAAD says school qualifications from EU/EEA countries or Switzerland that permit local university entry usually support access in Germany. That is still a qualification assessment, not a blanket rule based on an EU passport. For every other system, enter the exact qualification in DAAD/uni-assist and use anabin where needed. India’s 70% rule must not be exported to other countries.

  • Check whether a national university entrance examination or prior university study is required for your qualification.
  • For mixed qualifications, branch campuses, transfers or interrupted study, show the full record.
  • Keep citizenship and legal residence available for the application/visa rules, while assessing the education system separately.

Winter and summer: programme availability comes first

Winter and summer describe academic semesters, not universal application rounds. Typical university semesters run October–March and April–September; many universities of applied sciences use September–February and March–August. The institution sets its actual semester, lecture and enrolment dates.

Use the programme’s admission-semester field to check whether you can start in winter, summer or both. A university having a summer semester does not establish that your bachelor accepts new first-semester students then. Preparatory courses can have their own schedule.

15 July and 15 January are common examples in uni-assist’s guidance, not a national promise. Programmes, applicant categories and preparatory routes can close earlier. For Summer 2027 or Winter 2027/28, use a deadline only when the university has published it for your programme and applicant category.

  • Keep separate dates for tests, APS/VPD preparation, degree application, scholarships, offer acceptance and enrolment.
  • Record the official source, academic year and applicant category for each deadline.
  • Recheck before submitting, particularly if your final results arrive late or you change programme.

Then check APS, VPD and the application portal

Academic eligibility comes first. APS, where required, verifies educational records; uni-assist issues a VPD only for university procedures that request one. A VPD request is not the university’s final application. Our companion guide, “APS vs VPD: which documents do you need?”, explains the issuers, country scope and processing sequence.

Your next practical step

Create a one-page education summary and a shortlist of three suitable programmes. Use the official qualification check, then ask any unresolved question with your exact documents and desired degree attached through the university’s secure process. Keep the answer with the programme record.

Checked 22 September 2026. This guide supports route planning and does not decide an individual case. Recognition, subject fit, admission and visa permission remain separate decisions. Check costs, financial-proof requirements and programme deadlines separately for your own application.

  • Do I qualify for direct access, a specific subject area or preparation?
  • Is my previous academic year recognised, and is credit transfer a separate request?
  • Do I need APS, VPD, a language test or an additional assessment?
  • Which application must be submitted to which portal, and by which confirmed date?
