MEDICINE / COUNTRY GUIDE

Study medicine
in Ireland.

Ireland offers English-language school-leaver medicine, usually over five or six years, and separate four-year graduate-entry routes. RCSI has published specific 2027 entry and Casper requirements for privately funded non-EU school leavers. Plan the cost of the whole course and the later internship: admission does not guarantee an intern post.

ADMISSION / AT A GLANCE

Entrance tests in Ireland.

Tests differ by applicant category and route

There is no single test compulsory for every international applicant. At RCSI, EU school-leavers use HPAT; privately funded non-EU school-leavers use Casper for 2027; graduate entry has separate test rules.

Admission sources checked . Each requirement retains its programme and intake scope.

HPAT-Ireland

Required in RCSI’s Irish/EU school-leaver route; not required for its non-EU school-leavers.

Applies to: Applicant classification uses nationality and residence criteria, not passport alone.

Casper SJT

Required for privately funded non-EU RCSI school-leavers in the 2027 cycle.

Applies to: Register before the 15 January 2027 application deadline; published sitting is 17 January 2027.

Official requirements for Casper SJT ↗

An admission test, language requirement and medical licensing examination serve different purposes. For Indian citizens and OCI applicants, NEET eligibility is a separate India-return planning requirement; it does not automatically replace the destination university’s selection.

Qualification and duration
Primary medical qualification such as MB BCh BAO from the named Irish programme; graduate-entry medicine is a distinct admissions route. Usually five or six years for school leavers, or four years for graduate-entry medicine, followed by the appropriate supervised internship and registration process.
Admission route
Curriculum-specific school grades for direct medicine, or a qualifying prior degree for graduate entry; tests and application channels depend on fee/applicant category.
Patient / clinical language
English in the clinical setting; communication, occupational-health and professional requirements still apply.
Tuition at the selected universities
RCSI publishes €62,000 annual non-EU medicine tuition for 2027/28 plus a one-off €135 NUI fee. Future-year increases are possible; living costs and the internship stage are separate.
Living budget
For visa finance evidence, Ireland requires access to at least €10,000 for first-year living, plus tuition, and evidence of funds for later years. A practical Dublin accommodation and living budget can be substantially higher.
India-return planning

An Irish degree does not guarantee an internship or complete the Indian return pathway. Four-year graduate-entry medicine needs particular review against the applicable medical-course duration rule; prior non-medical study cannot simply be added. Read the Indian requirements →

Your application, step by step.

  1. Choose school-leaver or graduate-entry medicine

Identify the precise qualification, course length, campus and non-EU category. A four-year GEM offer is not a direct Class XII medicine route.

  2. Match grades and English evidence

Compare the correct board/curriculum subjects and results with the selected programme’s 2027 conditions. Do not transfer one university’s minimums to all of Ireland.

School-leaver medicine and GEM are different choices

Irish school-leaver medicine commonly takes five or six years. A four-year graduate-entry programme requires previous higher education and its own academic/test criteria. It should not be shown as a cheaper, faster route available to every school leaver.

Compare the exact campus and regulator-approved programme. A university brand operating internationally does not mean every campus has identical clinical training, internship access or later UK recruitment treatment.

RCSI’s published Indian-board requirements for 2027

For the cited CBSE/CISCE category, RCSI lists a five-year route with a 90% average across five subjects and at least 75% in Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics. Its six-year route lists an 80% average with the same specified 75% subject minimums.

These are eligibility conditions for this institution and category, not guaranteed offers or a national Irish cutoff. The course also specifies its own English evidence; the supplied RCSI requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component in one sitting.

2027 applications and the new Casper step

For the relevant non-EU applicants outside North America, RCSI lists direct applications from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 for September 2027 entry. Privately funded non-EU school-leaver applicants must also take the stated Casper test on 17 January 2027, with registration by 15 January.

This RCSI category does not require HPAT. Do not import the EU applicant workflow, or assume that an Indian national in Oman belongs to an Omani government-sponsored exemption category. Confirm the test fee in the official booking process; an unverified older amount is not quoted here.

RCSI 2027/28 fees and the multi-year commitment

RCSI publishes €62,000 annual non-EU medicine tuition for 2027/28 plus a one-off €135 NUI charge. At unchanged tuition, five years would be €310,000 and six years €372,000, before that one-off charge and living costs. Those calculations are not fixed-price contracts.

RCSI requires 50% of fees before enrolment and the balance by 31 January. It notes annual increases, historically around 2%, without promising that future increases will stay at that level. Build a reserve rather than budgeting only from the first-year invoice.

Housing and living: check the contract length

The supplied RCSI 2026/27 accommodation examples range from €9,020 for a twin room to €13,612 for a single over 41 weeks. That is a housing example, not all living expenses for a full twelve months. Add food, personal travel, insurance and any summer accommodation.

Use a specific Dublin or Galway quote instead of an Ireland-wide rent assumption. Ask whether a booking payment is refundable if your visa is refused and whether clinical placements create additional commuting or short-stay costs.

Applying from India or as an Oman resident

The official long-stay study process uses the Irish online visa application system and the supporting-document submission instructions for the relevant office. Use the linked government guide for the application route, signed summary and required evidence.

Prepare the offer, academic and English records, medical insurance, funding and any required translations. An Indian passport holder lawfully residing in Oman should follow the submission instructions for that residence while declaring nationality and document-issuing countries correctly.

Where tuition exceeds €6,000, the government study guide normally requires at least €6,000 paid before the visa application; the institution can require more. This does not replace RCSI’s larger enrolment payment schedule.

Visa funds and school fees are separate evidence

For the applicable course length, Irish immigration requires immediate access to at least €10,000 for first-year living in addition to tuition, with evidence of ready access to the same living amount and tuition for subsequent years. Dublin’s real costs can exceed this minimum.

Prepare six months of financial activity and evidence of the sponsor relationship and available funds. Explain large deposits using a documented source. A statement showing a temporary balance without a sustainable plan is not the same as financing five or six years of medicine.

An internship is a separate competitive stage

The Medical Council states that an internship is not guaranteed. The approved internship normally lasts at least twelve months and includes at least three months each in medicine and surgery. Undergraduate clerkships and simulation are preparation for this stage, not a guaranteed employed intern post.

The HSE page currently gives anticipated 16 October–23 November 2026 application dates, closing at noon, for the July 2027 internship campaign. This concerns students graduating for that intern year, not school leavers entering medicine in September 2027. The final campaign guidance remains important before relying on an allocation category.

Registration and permission to work

A primary Irish medical degree alone does not authorise unrestricted practice. The appropriate Medical Council registration and approved internship lead to the Certificate of Experience and the normal progression to general registration.

Student immigration permission is not blanket permission to take a full-time doctor post. Obtain the required professional registration and the relevant immigration/work permission for the actual internship or later employment. Specialty training and specialist registration are further stages.

Resolve the return pathway before accepting a short course

A four-year GEM course is normally 48 months of medical education. Do not claim it meets a 54-month medical-course requirement by adding an unrelated earlier bachelor’s degree. Obtain a written assessment of the applicable Indian route before paying for GEM with India return as the goal.

For a five- or six-year route, record the actual curriculum, internship hospital, institutional relationship, training country and host-country registration entitlement. Ireland is not automatically interchangeable with the UK under Indian designated-country provisions. No internship or licensing guarantee should be inferred from an admission offer.

Quick admission answers for Ireland.

Does an Indian passport holder automatically need HPAT?

No. At RCSI the non-EU school-leaver route does not require HPAT. Privately funded non-EU school-leavers instead need Casper for 2027. Determine the university’s applicant category first.

Can a graduate use the same RCSI route as a school-leaver?

RCSI directs non-EU degree-holders to graduate-entry medicine. That route requires an eligible degree and competitive MCAT or GAMSAT; school-leaver test advice cannot be reused.
