Start with language and the type of award
Public medicine in Germany is normally taught and assessed in German. An English-taught business or engineering catalogue at the same university does not change the language of medicine. Institutions specify acceptable advanced German certificates and their required results.
Distinguish a German state-examination course from an English programme delivered partly in Germany by a foreign university. The awarding body, training locations and route to medical licensing must be visible before comparing prices.

Indian school eligibility: a threshold, not an admission cutoff
APS India’s February 2026 update sets a 70% overall Class XII threshold for its specified Indian school routes from winter 2026/27. One route leads to Studienkolleg; another combines school qualification with a successfully completed year of regular bachelor’s study at a recognised institution for subject-restricted direct entry.
This threshold is not a medicine admission score and is not a universal rule for IB, A-level or every foreign qualification. The subject relationship of prior university study also matters. A year of an unrelated bachelor’s course is not a guaranteed medicine shortcut.

APS, university assessment and Studienkolleg do different jobs
APS checks academic credentials; a university or uni-assist assesses admission entitlement and the course application. A VPD, where requested, is a preliminary assessment document, not an offer. Book these stages early enough to have final evidence by the institution’s deadline.
A medicine-focused Studienkolleg route normally means an M-course and the Feststellungsprüfung. Completing it provides an entrance qualification for the relevant subject area, not automatic selection for medicine. Applicants must also meet the university’s language and ranking requirements.
For CBSE or another Indian-linked qualification completed while living in Oman, request the precise document route from APS and the university. Residence in the Gulf alone is not evidence of an exemption.

Not every applicant needs the same aptitude test
Charité’s published non-European foreign-qualification route uses uni-assist and a 5% international quota ranked by converted academic grades. It states that TestAS, internships and references are not considered in that quota. It also does not issue conditional offers: required evidence must be ready by the deadline.
Charité lists 15 January and 15 July application deadlines for the relevant summer and winter routes. Other universities can use different processes, so a claim that every medical applicant needs TMS or TestAS is misleading.

What the German medical course contains
The federal medical-training framework includes six years of study and at least 5,500 hours, a 48-week practical year, first-aid training, three months of nursing service and four months of clinical electives known as Famulatur. State examinations occur in three stages.
The practical year belongs to the German training structure; it should not be relabelled as a separately guaranteed Indian-compliant internship. Keep the official curriculum and signed placement records, especially if you plan to seek registration in another country.

Public and private costs need different comparisons
Public does not always mean tuition-free. At Heidelberg, the cited non-EU tuition is €1,500 per semester in addition to semester contributions, with exemptions and practical-year provisions that can affect the total.
Private payment schedules should not be confused with degree length. A five-year instalment schedule may finance a longer course. The figures below are current supplied schedule examples, not guaranteed prices for a new 2027 entrant.
Public and private costs need different comparisons| Route | Supplied tuition example | Important distinction |
|---|
| Witten/Herdecke | €76,800 total; €1,280 across 60 payment months | Payment months do not make this a five-year medical degree. |
| Brandenburg Medical School | €118,000 total | Dividing by 6.25 years produces a planning average, not the annual invoice. |
| UMCH / UMFST | €17,400 per semester in the cited schedule | Foreign award; confirm applicant category, increases and all training locations. |

UMCH: know the Romanian award and travel requirements
UMCH’s official programme page identifies enrolment with UMFST in Târgu Mureș, Romania. It explicitly includes modules in Romania during years one to three, including anatomy, microbiology and pathology. It is therefore not an all-six-years-in-Germany route.
The page describes English teaching alongside German/English clinical training and approximately B2 German by the beginning of year three. Clinical-hospital preferences are subject to the allocation process, not a guaranteed placement choice.
Before accepting, obtain the degree-awarding country, each training location and the precise route to German recognition in writing. These facts also matter to the Indian requirement concerning where the medical course and internship are completed.

Finance and the visa from India or Oman
For an admitted student, the federal portal gives €11,904 a year (€992 a month) as the 2026 funding benchmark. Accepted mechanisms include a blocked account, an eligible scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment. Tuition and housing deposits still require additional available funds.
Use the official study-visa portal and the German mission responsible for your lawful residence. An Indian passport holder legally resident in Oman needs the Oman submission instructions and residence evidence; school documents and APS questions still follow the actual qualification.
The blocked account is your own released living money. Do not count its full balance once as a “visa fee” and again as annual living costs. DAAD’s indicative living range is a separate budgeting aid, not a guarantee that the visa minimum covers every city.

Approbation, employment and specialist training
Practising as a doctor requires the appropriate German authorisation. Approbation is the full medical licence; a foreign degree follows the applicable recognition process and should not be treated as automatically equivalent because teaching occurred in Germany.
Medical German and the state authority’s evidence requirements matter beyond an academic English or German certificate. Postgraduate specialist training is generally an employment-based route with approved training, registration and immigration conditions. An admission offer does not promise a training job.

Questions to settle before choosing Germany for India return
For German-medium state-examination medicine, obtain advice on the English-medium condition in the applicable Indian foreign-medical-graduate rules before making a financial commitment. A prestigious public institution does not remove that condition.
For an English foreign-award campus, document every training country, clinical language, internship arrangement and local registration entitlement. Neither the label “Germany” nor an English brochure is enough to establish eligibility to practise later in India.
