Study in India

Your route.
Your next step.

Use separate pathways for Indian residents, Indians studying abroad, OCI/PIO and other foreign applicants. Citizenship, schooling, state eligibility, chosen course and counselling scheme determine the route; NRI is not one universal admission category.

Which route are you exploring?

Choose the closest starting point. Check the exceptions before acting.

01Indian resident: undergraduate engineeringAn Indian citizen educated in India who is considering IIT, NIT+ or another engineering institution.
  1. Check the course’s entrance route, required school subjects and qualifying-year rules.
  2. For the applicable national route, use JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA rules for the exact year.
  3. Separately check state or institution counselling where relevant; upload valid category documents only for the scheme in question.
Check these details
  • JoSAA does not cover every Indian university.
  • Exam qualification, board eligibility, seat category and counselling registration are distinct checks.
02Indian citizen studying abroad: engineering and DASAAn Indian passport holder with overseas schooling considering ordinary or DASA routes.
  1. Check ordinary engineering admission eligibility as well as DASA separately.
  2. For DASA 2026, verify the JEE Main paper/rank and overseas-schooling conditions in the current brochure.
  3. Check CIWG only if its parent-employment and document conditions apply; follow the current CSAB registration process.
Check these details
  • DASA has detailed overseas-schooling and nationality conditions. Check the current brochure rather than treating residence abroad as sufficient.
  • CIWG is a particular DASA category, not a benefit for every expatriate family or every college.
03OCI/PIO or other foreign applicant: engineeringA foreign passport holder, with or without OCI/PIO status, studying in India or overseas.
  1. Record citizenship, OCI/PIO card date and the relevant exam/counselling route.
  2. Read the JEE Advanced 2026 OCI(I)/OCI(F) choices and their consequences before registration.
  3. For NIT+ options, check DASA’s separate nationality and schooling rules; ask the authority about unresolved classification.
Check these details
  • OCI is not Indian citizenship or automatically NRI.
  • An OCI choice permitted by JEE Advanced must not be assumed to grant every Indian reservation benefit or transfer unchanged to NEET.
04Indian resident: MBBS or BDSAn applicant seeking undergraduate medical or dental study in India.
  1. Check NEET UG eligibility and qualifying subjects for the exam year.
  2. Identify which desired seats are administered by MCC and which by a state authority.
  3. Check the relevant domicile, category and institution conditions, then register and participate in the correct counselling.
Check these details
  • A NEET score does not itself produce an admission or an entitlement to a state quota.
  • Kerala nativity categories are one state’s rules, not rules for all India.
05NRI, OCI or foreign applicant: MBBS or BDSAn overseas-linked applicant exploring ordinary eligible seats or a specifically offered NRI seat category.
  1. First establish NEET UG and school-qualification eligibility.
  2. Choose the counselling authority and examine its category-specific proof and seat rules.
  3. For MCC NRI-category choices, follow the current subcategory, supporting-document and verification process.
  4. Check institution fees, permitted intake and the official seat matrix before committing.
Check these details
  • There is no nationwide NRI seat entitlement or universal sponsor rule.
  • MCC distinguishes NRI-related, Indian-to-NRI, OCI and foreign-document categories; a relative abroad is not automatic approval.
06Returning with foreign school or higher qualificationsAn applicant whose entry qualification was awarded outside India, regardless of citizenship.
  1. Check whether the intended admitting institution or counselling scheme needs formal equivalence.
  2. Use the current UGC framework where applicable, while checking professional council exclusions.
  3. Confirm which equivalence evidence the particular current admissions authority will accept.
Check these details
  • Qualification equivalence is separate from a seat category and does not guarantee admission.
  • Current counselling brochures may name specific evidence or authorities; do not silently substitute one certificate for another.

Plan the details with confidence.

Questions worth asking

Is an OCI student the same as an NRI student?

No. OCI concerns a foreign national’s registration status. An Indian citizen studying or living abroad may be an NRI under the applicable scheme. Admission categories also depend on schooling, documents, course and counselling rules.

Does every Indian college have an NRI quota?

No. A seat category exists only where the applicable scheme and institution offer it. Verify the current official matrix, eligibility and fee schedule; do not use a nationwide percentage.

Can NRI or foreign applicants skip NEET for MBBS in India?

NRI, OCI and foreign status do not provide a blanket NEET exemption. Check the current NEET eligibility rules and the competent counselling authority’s admission conditions.

Does DASA undergraduate admission use SAT scores?

The verified DASA 2026 undergraduate brochure uses the relevant JEE Main 2026 paper. Old SAT-based DASA guidance must not be presented as current. Other institutions’ independent routes may differ.

Do I have the same reservation rights if I choose OCI(I)?

Do not assume that. JEE Advanced 2026 describes OPEN/OPEN-PwD and applicable female supernumerary treatment for OCI(I), without SC/ST/OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS reservation. This is that specific scheme’s rule, not a universal OCI policy.

Can I use my parents’ home state for every state quota?

Not automatically. A state may consider origin, residence, schooling, parent employment and the course involved. Kerala’s 2026 prospectus illustrates distinct Keralite/NK I/NK II categories; check the desired state’s own rules.
